Lasley United Methodist Church

Who We Are

John Lasley donated the land Lasley is located on. The original building was a log cabin and the first Methodist church in Louisa County. Actual records go back to October 20, 1780 when the first bishop, Francis Asbury, lectured on II Peter, chapter 1, verses 4-9, at “Lesley’s Meeting House” as the church was then called. After the cabin was outgrown a new wooden church was built at the current site. The second building served the community for many years until it was destroyed by fire.

Our Services

What are services like?
Services follow a traditional Methodist format with minor seasonal variations: -Responsive Call to Worship -Hymn -Psalter (group reading of a Psalm) -Recitation of Apostle's Creed -Old Testament Reading -Children's Time -Hymn -Gospel (New Testament) reading -Morning Prayer -Sermon -Hymn

What is the community like?
Our church community consists of life-long members as well as newcomers to the community. At Homecoming there are frequently members who can trace their lineage back to our founder. We enjoy each others company and occasionally attend community events together (such as performances at the Louisa Arts Center) and with the members of the other 2 churches in this charge. We are all active in the community through our jobs, through our social networks, and through our participation in volunteer organizations.

What if I'm not a Christian?
Everybody is welcome into our community. None of us is perfect, and none of us profess to be so. We are all a work-in-process as far as our discipleship is concerned.

Judy DeBres

Pastor Debres has an Associate degree in Occupational Therapy, a Bachelor’s degree from Virginia Commonwealth University in Family Health and Spiritual Services, and a Masters of Divinity from Wesley Theological Seminary. She is working towards a Doctorate of Ministry (DMin) at Wesley in the Soul Care Track. Debres is a volunteer chaplain at UVA Hospital and a PRN Hospice Chaplain. She is originally from Kalamazoo, Michigan. It was during her time as a pediatric occupational therapist that she began to understand she was called to serve the families she was working with. She saw that there were so many families with special needs children who did not have a church home that could meet their family’s needs. These experiences allowed her to form and answer her call to ministry.
