Saint Sophia Orthodox Christian Mission

An Ancient Path of Healing for People in a Modern World

Sun 9:30am Orthodox (Greek) Newcomers welcome Bend, OR

About Us

We are an English-speaking Orthodox Christian mission parish with an emphasis on joyful, beautiful, peaceful, and prayerful worship. We are also family-oriented and kid-friendly! Our Mission is a church for all and is one of Central Oregon's link to the still-living Church of the Apostles and the ancient path of mystical Christian spirituality. Our emphais is mystical communion with God and becoming truly and fully human.

We welcome all visitors to our worship services, regardless of their spiritual background or inclinations. Come taste and see the original ancient Christian worship “in the beauty of holiness” that is nearly 2000 years old, yet even more relevant for today. Welcome home!

What to Expect

What are services like?
Because Orthodox Christian worship is ancient and from the Near East, much of it will seem unfamiliar to those whose prior church experience has been in other churches. There is the sight of candles and oil lamps, there is the smell of sweet incense in the air, there are the icons of Christ and His saints, most of the service is chanted and sung, people are bowing and crossing themselves, and the service's focus is joining our heavenly brothers and sisters in joyful worship. This is how we have worshiped Jesus for almost 2,000 years.

What is the community like?
There is a service book and a bulletin you can follow the service with. The greeters will be happy to answer any questions you have. But most of all, just observe and absorb. The best way to learn is by experiencing, seeing, and tasting. And give it some time. Come to several services to better absorb what this profound spiritual experience is. Then join us for coffee and treats afterward and get to know us.

What if I'm not a Christian?
We love visitors and those interested in knowing some more about us. So when you come, you will be warmly welcomed and not expected to have to do things a particular way or give money. We're fellow pilgrims just like you.
