About Us

Calvary Episcopal Church can trace its roots back to the time when Glenn Springs became a bustling community in southern Spartanburg County.

Founded
Calvary Episcopal Church was established as a parish on Feb. 20, 1848. The original church was constructed downhill from the existing church, standing adjacent to the Episcopal Church Cemetery. However, the road to the original church flooded often, leading the church’s members to rebuild on higher ground. The existing church structure on Glenn Springs Road, built in 1896, is a charming, well-preserved example of 19th century architecture, featuring some stained glass windows from the original church and several newer and exceptionally beautiful Tiffany stained glass windows donated by the J. C. Zimmerman, a prominant resident who owned the Glenn Springs Hotel up until 1853. The alter, pews, and chancel furniture were handcrafted by the founding rector, the Rev. J.D. McCullough.
