Greetings Wonewoc UMC; I am a member of Fountain Park UMC in Sheboygan, WI. We are currently following the 17 step discernment process towards disaffiliation. One of our main concerns, as I’m sure many churches have, is the payments required by the Wisconsin Conference to leave the UMC. This includes apportionments, unfunded pension and legal fees that the Wisconsin Conference has imposed upon churches that want to leave. Our main objection is being forced to pay the unfunded pension and the legal fees. However we have not been able to find a solution to challenge this demand. So we are reaching out to several UM churches across the state that we believe are also in the process of disaffiliation to see if anyone has found a solution to making a challenge. Our questions to you is. Are you in fact disaffiliating? If so, are you planning on going along with the Wis Conference and pay what they are demanding? Finally, if you want to challenge these fees, have you found a path towards making a legal challenge? We feel that there is strength in numbers and if numerous UM churches challenge together, it would possibly be more beneficial to all the churches involved if they work together.
