Leadership

Pastor Chris Apperson

The Fisherman’s Net is a friendly, safe place to learn about God and have a network of support to help you through life. We believe in the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. That means we try to do what Jesus said: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” The Fisherman’s Net Christian Church has been an influence in the lives of thousands of people under the 50-year leadership of the now-retiring Pastor Alex Silva. Its beginnings were quite modest and it has more or less remained that way over the decades. When our country had its share of turmoil and unrest in the late 1960s and early 1970s, God responded to the prayers of His people and sent fresh winds of Holy Spirit activity to the earth. Southeast Michigan was fortunate to be one of those areas to experience it. Specifically, pockets throughout the tri-county area of metro Detroit encountered God’s grace and forgiveness, resulting in repentance and transformed lives from a diverse array of religious backgrounds. God met the disillusioned, yet hungry and searching in barber shops, church basements, city parks and in high school & college auditoriums. It was here the Fisherman’s Net was birthed. Fortunate to partner with a few established churches, the young men and women of the Net studied the Holy Scriptures, devoured the ‘red letters’ of Jesus, and lived out the Great Commission of Matthew 28:19 – 20. We adopted Matthew 4:19 “Follow me and I will make you fishers of men” as our placard and as core to our mission and vision. When our membership burgeoned to 350 – 400 at one point, approximately 100 members formed another congregation closer to the city of Detroit’s urban setting they desired to reach. We financially supported this ‘sister’ church during their first year, and continue to work together on outreaches occasionally. Currently, we have a congregation of about 100 families and average Sunday in-building attendance is 80 people, while others join via Facebook Live or podcasts. Demographically, we are an older suburban, middle-class church. We are mostly between mid 40s and into our 70s. There are a handful of young families with children and a few young singles. Our church was quite mission-focused and our members have traveled across most of the world. Additionally, local outreach is a priority for our spending of time and money. While we realize when a long-serving pastor leaves, it can be troublesome for the congregation and for the incoming pastor, we believe our members are mature and dedicated to the service of Jesus, more so than to a single individual. We believe the words of Philippians 1:6 apply to our body of believers: “being confident of this, that He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”
