Bishop Elijah Samuel Green was born June 28, 1923 to the late Reverend Maston Green and the late Cora Lee (Hobgood) Green in Oxford, North Carolina. Bishop Green transitioned Thursday, February 1, 2018. Bishop Green attended White Rock Baptist Church, where his father was the founder and Pastor. He was educated in North Carolina and attended Berea Grammar School and Joe Toler High School. He was a veteran of the United States Army; where he served in World War II as a truck driver who delivered general supplies to the troops; and a mechanic responsible for maintaining the fleet. Bishop Green married the late Mother Louise Green and moved to Connecticut in the late 1940s. Upon their arrival he worked various jobs. He was a factory worker as well as a school bus driver, before becoming an entrepreneur. He owned a corner store and restaurant. He began his apostolic journey in 1951, when the late Mother Louise Green read the word of God and understood the necessity of the baptism in Jesus’ name and the infilling of the Holy Ghost. She insisted that she was going to be baptized and recommended that he did too. Under the leadership of the Late District Elder Charles Mitchell, he was baptized in Jesus’ name and was filled with the Holy Ghost at Little Refuge Church of Christ (now known as Faith Refuge Church). Bishop Green was zealous for the Lord. He desired to gain greater knowledge of God and his word. He attended the Church of Our Lord Jesus Christ (COOLJC) Bible College in New York and earned his THB. D.D. He answered the call to preach the gospel and his initial sermon was at Little Refuge Church in 1953. Following the direction of the Lord, Bishop Green established Straightway Church of Christ in New haven, CT; where he has been evangelizing the Fair Haven Community for many years. He and the saints of Straightway were known for witnessing and handing out tracts. Bishop Green was passionate when it came to souls and evangelism. If someone wanted to be baptized in Jesus’ name; he would make every effort to ensure it took place the same day. He started missions in New London and Danbury, CT. He planted seeds, they were watered by others, and God most certainly gave the increase as we see the fruit of his labor today.
