I attended Soma from 2016 thru 2024. Candid review, let's see if they delete it. I went thru the full experience, baptism, serving, teaching kids, membership and ultimately "disfellowshipping" in the Jehovah's Witnesses style. I encourage deep probing questions, and cross reference answers across the elders. You will find explicit avoidance of hard issues leading to misalignment on vital topics. I realized too late that biblical theology takes a back seat to pop culture, DEI, and Postmodernism. After a few years I started asking basic questions and the attacks began. Behind my back leadership spread a dozen lies/rumors and directed my church family to shun me based on things I never said. The cult treatment, reputation destruction via gossip and slander were my reward for theological curiosity. I made the mistake of being a new Christian and believing the bible could be safely discussed. Turns out the book is controversial, and the text itself offended leadership. They are concealing their heresy with vague answers, playing both sides. Their Trans BLM Rainbow flag is hidden in every sermon. Asking their candid views was an offensive act and answers changed wildly depending on who was asking. If the Bible offers something controversial in the weekly schedule, that chapter will either be skipped entirely or the story will be taught in the style of streaming television. Teaching always centers around a Hollywood interpretation, anything not TV friendly is skipped. As example, Soma ascribes to the "Ennegram" personality test which divides everyone in 9 groups, based on 1960s Eastern Mysticism of the 9 pointed star. My suggestion of an individualized heroic identification in Christ was taken unironically as "typical #8." All couples married by Soma are taught that compatibility with this astrology is essential. Leadership shut church for months during COVID for fear of crowds, but marched amongst crowded BLM protests the same week. Every BLM martyr was named and prayed for. White Christians are highlighted as burdened by unforgivable racial sin and therefore deserving of collective diminishment. Strangely Israel is above criticism, "free Palestine" is hate speech and Zionism the default. Lead preacher (Kent) gladly self identifies as a "Straight white cisgender middle income Christian male" and cisgender men are oppressive by definition. Wives use the mean girl, chest poking, slandering, scolding method openly to hold authority over all men. Adam and Eve (as pictured below) : Soma resists a he/she Genesis interpretation in favor of they/them. Associating women with child bearing or men with blue collar dust is NOT welcome. The mistakes of Eve are unmentionables. The mistakes of Adam are undiscussed. The lesson is missed entirely and taboo according to social norms. Exodus, Numbers, Ezra, Ester, Nehemiah, Acts, etc: The measurements of the tabernacle may get several days of teaching, but don't ask about Exodus 23:20, Numbers, 33:55, the entire second half of Ezra or Nehemiah or Acts. Epistles and Letters: Paul's guidance to men and women is taboo in the extreme. These are cherry picked and wildly suppressed. Biblical Jesus is an unwelcome guest at Soma. Too many of the attendees are Medical Professionals, healing via Christ threatens their income and prestige. Soma rejected the sick and poor at the doors via temperature checks, and leadership was furious when I discussed Christ's example. The children in classrooms were kept in masks long after the adults breathed free. Soma insisted I squelch my children while the preacher and singers were unmasked. Ask about this, I dare you. The men are threatened by dusty carpenters, you'll find very few handymen. Truth telling is presumed toxic. Casual lying is routine to avoid confrontation, which makes candid speech a rarity. SSRI, Adderall, Vyvanse, and lithium are Soma's daily Communion, many are hopelessly addicted to numbness. Questions will be interpreted as attacks. Test this using the slides below. Observe how quickly they avoid any hermeneutics or exegesis.
