- The Shady Grove independent church was founded in Winnsboro South Carolina on Carmack Hill, in 1823 by Nine Negro, slave men. They worshiped for nearly 90 years before joining the African Methodist Episcopal church system. After serving for 97 years they unanimously agreed to seceded from the A. M. E. Church system and in 2009 the name was changed to its current title the Shady Grove independent church.
