Imeldia Morris Eller shared their experience Jul 2026

One Sunday morning in the late 1940’s , I went with my Grandpa, the Rev. John S. Harris, to a house on Fisher Street in Concord N.C. Grandpa was helping a small group who met in that home on Fisher St. to start a new Baptist Church. My grandpa preached that day and the lady of the house, Mrs. Young, played the organ in their living room, while we all sang hymns. I was so little that my feet did not touch the floor when l sat down. That was around 1949. I am now 81 years old. I felt like such a big girl that Sunday and was so happy and proud because l felt that l was helping my grandpa start something wonderful. I remain very grateful —in that l was there for the very first meeting with my Grandpa—and that l was there with that small group that became Fisher Street Baptist Church—which still stands to this day!! I will never forget my grandpa holding my hand that day as we walked across the Railroad tracks from S. Ridge Ave. where l lived and from where grandpa was staying with my family—to cross the Kannapolis Highway and walk down the street, that finally led us to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Young. I feel so blessed to have been there with my grandpa that first day that was the beginning of Fisher Street Baptist Church of Concord NC and l am grateful that my Grandpa took me with him that very first day when he was so instrumental in helping start your church. To be with my Grandpa and to be with that small group ever so long ago will always be very vivid in my mind. I am grateful that, at four years old, l could be part of that glorious first meeting of the Fisher Street Baptist Church of Concord, North Carolina. Thank you for reading about the story of my forever memory that l just shared with you. My grandpa served as your first pastor until a permanent pastor could be sought. If my memory serves me right, my grandpa had come out of retirement to be the first pastor. Again, l was so happy to be a small part of being there on one of the first days that was the beginning of a wonderful Church that still stands to this day. I am so grateful!!
