First Presbyterian Church

About Us

Progressive, Inclusive, Service oriented.

Sunday mornings feature a worship service using contemporary language that is designed to challenge and equip worshippers for life in the wider community.
We serve as the home for 17 different community organizations, from the local Habitat for Humanity to a community chorus, scouting programs to support groups. We provide space and volunteers for the Free Clinic of Alpena which provides medical care for the uninsured.
This is a place where faith goes to work and where we remember that what we believe about God is not nearly as important as to remember that God believes in us!

What to Expect

What are services like?
Worship services are structured through the use of a bulletin and responsive readings that use contemporary language. The bulletin is a guide but not a vice so there is a casual tone within the service.

What is the community like?
There is a welcoming atmosphere and a desire to make people feel both welcome and comfortable. The congregation has more older folks than younger ones, but that has been shifting over the last 2 years as younger families with children have been participating. The congregation has a mix of traditional, contemporary, liberal and conservative folk who seem to enjoy one another, united in our common mission rather than divided.

What if I'm not a Christian?
We believe that the WAY of Jesus is how most of us have come to know God, but we're not ready to limit God to a particular denomination or theology. We enjoy the diversity of creation.
