Alpena First United Methodist

About Us

Open hearts, open minds, open doors

We are a Christ centered United Methodist congregation with roots in this community that extend back nearly 150 years. Neither small nor large in size, we are just right. We are open theologically to both conservative and progressive perspectives, with a style of worship that blends contemporary and traditional. Our mission is to grow (and to encourage others to grow) in our understanding of God, our love for God, and in our commitment and service to God, in the context of a loving community of faith. We have a Healing Prayer Ministry, a Prayer Shawl Ministry, a choir and bell choir, opportunities to serve others in Christ's name, and a Christian Education program for all ages.

What to Expect

What are services like?
Expect a warm welcome. In July and August, we have two services, an informal outdoor service on the shores of beautiful Lake Huron, and a traditional service in our Sanctuary. Expect nursery care at all of our indoor church services. During the fall, winter and spring expect a blended worship service, including praise choruses, guest musicians, projected images, etc., as well as the music of a traditional church choir, and on special occasions, a bell choir. Expect to be inspired, comforted, and challenged to grow in faith and in spirit. Expect well-prepared sermons from a balanced theological perspective. Enjoy our before service cafe and a time of fellowship after the service as well.

What is the community like?
A mix of all ages, some professional, some blue collar, we strive to be a church with open hearts, open minds and open doors. Our hearts are open because when others in our church family and beyond the doors of our church suffer, we attempt to reach out with compassion. Our minds are open because we are willing to listen to a variety of faith perspectives and to be in dialogue with people of different faiths. Our doors are open because all are welcome here.

What if I'm not a Christian?
All are welcome here. We are not concerned with how you are dressed, from what part of the country or world you have come, with what kind of work you do, or with how much money you make. No matter your denomination, even if you have no faith or have lost your faith, if you come here seeking a deeper relationship with God, you are welcome.
