Who We Are

We are a Landmark church interested in living out a tradition of carrying the best of our religious practices and values forward into an ever-changing world. As Disciples of Christ, we encourage each member to come to a personal understanding of how scripture informs their life. Although individual members may differ on particular aspects of interpretation, we gather weekly at the communion table unified by the thing we have in common which supersedes all differences, our common faith in Jesus Christ as our Savior.

Our Services

What are services like?
We are increasingly "loosening up"! While still working within a traditional worship structure, we look for opportunities to "break the mold" in order to allow God's Spirit to break through in new ways. We have a fine Choir, and an outstanding Pipe Organ and Organist, but would WELCOME a few musicians to help us add contemporary praise music to our services!

What is the community like?
We have aged, but are VERY eager to have younger families join our community, and to have then inform us as to what we can do to make worship and church life most fulfilling for them. We currently average 60 people in Worship each Sunday

What if I'm not a Christian?
As Disciples, we are very well suited to welcome "Seekers" , "Skeptics", and the "Casually Curious". We are committed to sharing what WE have found through our faith, in order that others may develop their OWN. We have no set dogma, creeds, or affirmations. We would be very pleased to have anyone join us who was simply interested in learning more about Jesus of Nazareth, and this movement called "Christianity" that has developed in a variety of forms following his teachings.

  • After 125 years, First Christian, Whittier closed its doors on December 31, 2019. I have been a member since my baptism in 1986, and attended before then for at least 4 years. I had the privilege of collating, identifying, and boxing for preservation the physical records of this church as an archival intern. FCW was a vibrant, active, and integral part of the Whittier community, which spread the gospel of Jesus Christ to many people, not just locally, but all around the world. In one word, I would describe our former church as welcoming. No one who walked through our doors was a stranger. We weren't exactly "preachy", but if you wanted to know about our beliefs (which were varied at times) we would take the time to teach Christianity as we saw it. But, you were always welcome and accepted as a member of our community. FCW is gone now, but its members now belong to other congregations, and some to none at all. Sometimes, there can only be one home. But we move on, living according to Christ's example and his commission, to make disciples of all nations and his great commandment, to love God, and to love our neighbor as ourselves. RIP, First Christian Church Whittier, California: 1895-2019.
