About Us

Following Jesus into his mission of redemptive love.

Blacksoil is a new church with old roots. We are striving to be a fresh expression of the Christian faith still rooted in historic, biblical faith. Our heart is for the city of Lansing. Our mission is to love and follow Jesus and invite others into his mission of redemptive love. Our worship style is a mix of the ancient and modern, tradition and innovation.

What to Expect

What are services like?
Our services have a traditional structure, but an emphasis on expressing love for God in our own contemporary language and art. So we always pray, sing, read Scripture, have a sermon, take communion, etc. But we often choose prayers, songs, or visual art that is "indigenous" to our time and place. We also try to draw on a broad spectrum of the Christian tradition. So expect to hear "Amazing Grace" next Sufjan Stevens or Johnny Cash, "Come Thou Fount" next to a gospel spiritual, an ancient Celtic prayer followed by one from Oscar Romero or Martin Luther King, Jr.

What is the community like?
Right now we are young-ish, but we hope to grow more intergenerational. There is a strong emphasis on discipleship--being serious about following Jesus. But there is also an inclusive spirit, welcoming of folks regardless of where they are on their spiritual journey, what their political affiliations are, etc.

What if I'm not a Christian?
Great. Our hope is that people who are curious about the Christian faith or what it means to "follow Jesus" would find a welcoming, safe environment. While our community and its mission will remain grounded in the death and resurrection of Christ and the mission of redemptive love that flows from that, we are welcoming to skeptics, doubters, and wanderers. We love to talk and make space for people to ask their questions and still feel that they belong.
