United Presbyterian Church

Small but active congregation that cares for everyone!

Sun 9:30am Presbyterian (PCUSA) Newcomers welcome Milford, CT

About Us

We're a small but active congregation along the shores of Long Island Sound, Ft. Trumbull beach in Milford, CT. The one thing visitors always say about us, "You really care about one another." After announcements, worship begins with an invitation for the congregation to first share any prayer concerns for friends, family, community & the world and then we celebrate the joys of the past week, a God-sighting or blessing that we wish to share. The congregation looks beyond outward appearances and embraces each person as a child of God.

What to Expect

What are services like?
We follow the typical Presbyterian pattern of worship which is traditional. However, we are casual enough to "call an audible" or make changes even during worship. We know that worship is not about the details but rather the spirit. We have laypeople every week who volunteer to be Worship Assistants. We also have a few times a year a "contemporary service" where there are only guitars providing the music.

What is the community like?
Very friendly, welcoming, and caring. These are the three words we hear constantly from visitors and new members. We're a small congregation with a big heart!

What if I'm not a Christian?
You are welcome to participate in worship, church school, fellowship activities. We are all on a journey of faith. If you are sincerely interested in what we believe and do, then come and watch and learn! Our pastor's door is always open to such conversations and questions about faith and life.

Stephen Scovell
Pastor

Rev. Steve was born and raised in the Promised Land, often referred to as New Jersey. He has always been extremely sociable and a lover of people. In his free time, he enjoys playing guitar, reading comics, and can often be found yelling at the TV while watching his favorite teams – the Mets, Giants, and Sixers. He is a graduate of Messiah University where he earned his B.A. in Economics. He was drawn to the field by a desire to develop a more holistic understanding of poverty and the best practices toward helping the most vulnerable in society. This passion led him to pursue pastoral ministry, and in the spring of 2020, he graduated with his M.Div. from Princeton Theological Seminary. During his time at Princeton, he served as a youth director/contemporary music director for a local Presbyterian Church. Steve loves to talk theology and is passionate about strengthening the relationship between the church and youth/young adults, as well as reimagining how we understand worship. He finds a lot of joy from serving in ministry alongside his wife, Amber. They have one son, Parker (named after the one and only Peter Parker) and a slightly defiant, fun-loving dog named Nala.
