About Us

A refuge, a peaceful haven tucked into the woods of Farmington Hills. We are close to the business of the rest of the city, but removed from its anxious drive. Here God's parental embrace is praised. Here Christ's peace sets the pace. Here we listen for the Spirit of God whistling through the trees. You are welcome to rest here, to pray here, to renew yourself. We pray that this will be a home for you, either for this moment or for a while. We pray that this home will be an image of our home eternal. Amen

What to Expect

What are services like?
Here at Trinity in the Woods, service is structured like a traditional Holy Eucharist (in the Episcopal Tradition we call it Rite II). But, the camp-style atmosphere rubs off onto our worship. Singing is quite a bit louder than similar sized churches. Your pew mate will strike a balance between uninhibited and reverent, and certainly help you around our easy to use bulletin, if you ever get lost. Jeans and T-shirts are as welcome as suits and ties. Some might call it sloppy high church, we call it broad church.

What is the community like?
This may be an older church community, reflecting the demography of the neighborhood we live in; but, that doesn't mean we are reserved in our welcome. The congregation is growing, hopeful and kind. It is possible to slip out after service, if you are bashful upon a first visit. But, if you talk to anyone, you will likely accidentally find yourself chatting up a storm at coffee hour.

What if I'm not a Christian?
All our welcome in our community. We strive to make our faith a catalyst for discourse, not discouragingly dogmatic. We are proud members of the Farmington Interfaith Association and have healthy relationships with many other faith communities. God hopes for unity among all peoples; therefore, finding similarities is essential.

Leadership

James Hamilton

James Hamilton

My calling, as it continues to coalesce into a more singular focus, is fed by three distinct drives in ministry. First, art delivered me to the church in the forms of theatre, literature and music and art continues to form my pedagogy for spiritual formation, my preaching passion and my joy of liturgical discovery. Second, social service and activism drew me into the Episcopal Church, a denomination not afraid to stand firm against adversity when defending the transformative claims of a gospel of love. Third, reconciliation and renewal was modeled for me in my work inside prisons, both with theatre and later with social services organizations. I believe a patient, loving community to be Christ’s wish for us as one body of faith.
