The Episcopal Church of the Redeemer

About Us

"Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness"

Welcome to The Episcopal Church of the Redeemer in Bethesda, Maryland, a vibrant, growing parish community of "inquiring and discerning hearts", where all - the doubter, the seeker, and the believer - are welcome to join us in living and wrestling with difficult questions that may have more than one answer, or no answer at all. Here we value an Anglican spirituality - one that is open to the mystery of the Holy and which celebrates the dignity of human nature and the beauty of all creation.

Redeemer is known for beautiful, reverent worship, excellence in preaching and music, and active outreach ministries to neighbors near and far. The parish is also known for its celebration of the sacred in the arts and in the world around us. This hallmark of our identity is revealed in the beauty of our church building, grounds, and gardens, in an annual exhibition of parishioners' art work, and in an extensive music series.

Redeemer's local outreach ministries include support of a local food bank and participation in Street Church, a weekly outdoor Eucharist and lunch program for homeless individuals in the District of Columbia. Internationally, the parish supports the Millennium Development Goals through projects in Honduras and Burundi.

I invite you to explore this community, a medium-sized parish of some 350 active members. No matter who you are or where you find yourself on the journey of faith, you are welcome here at Redeemer. We look forward to greeting you!

The Reverend Susan Thon, Rector

Our Services

What to Expect

What are services like?
Our services are based on the traditional Anglican liturgy. The 8:00 a.m. service is a quiet service usually with a smaller congregation. At 10:30 a.m. Eucharist, both the Adult and Youth choirs will sing as well as the congregation. Children go to Church School during part of the service each Sunday. We use both Rite I and Rite II from the Book of Common Prayer. On the First Monday of the month we have a Taize service. Throughout the year there are a number of special services, especially around Holy Week and Christmas. This is an open parish welcoming all people looking for a closer relationship with God and in community.

What is the community like?
Redeemer parishioners are welcoming and open. There are parishioners of all ages -- from newly baptized babies to those in their nineties. People are from all walks of life and backgrounds. Parishioners come from Maryland, Virginia and the District of Columbia. The community is very active in a variety of areas - music, preaching, outreach, adult education, children & youth, and more.

What if I'm not a Christian?
You are welcome! All are invited to come to Redeemer regardless of your faith background or if you are at present doubtful about your faith and belief.
