About Us

We are a priesthood of ALL believers --1 Peter 2:9

St. Paul African Methodist Episcopal Church (AMEC) is an affiliate church in the oldest predominately African African religious order in the United States of America.

With it's origins in the Free African Society of 1787, the AMEC is a Methodist order with a long history of social advocacy and community engagement to serve human needs in the "kingdom at hand" as well as to address issues of salvation in the "kingdom to come." St. Paul follows this tradition in New Orleans.

The AMEC is named as such because: (A) the order was originally founded by people of African descent; (M) we are Methodists in religious practice; and (E) we have an episcopal system of governance where, for example, bishops appoint presiding elders and pastors.
