What to Expect

What are services like?
We gather for worship on the Lord's Day at 11:00 a.m. Our services follow the traditional form (Rite I) of the Book of Common Prayer. This congregation gathers on other days and holy occasions as announced. Other services include: Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Christmas Eve. The Holy Scriptures are the basis of everything we say, pray, read, sing, teach and preach every time we gather in the Lord's name. We stand for singing, kneel for prayer, and sit for instruction. We have hard-back hymnals and Bibles in the pew racks. You won't see video screens, praise bands, special lighting or special effects during the service. Our goal is not to create a "worship experience", but to worship the Lord in spirit and in truth according to the faithful witness of the church throughout the ages.

What is the community like?
St. Agnes' is a family-size church located in a small Tennessee mountain town. Due to our size and context you will see that none of the parking is reserved, none of the pews are reserved, and we don't wear name tags. We take the approach that you are never a stranger in the house of the Lord. The congregation is steadily growing. Due to our growth (from only 4 members in 2004 to 37 members in 2019!) our church family includes an interesting diversity of ages from age 9 through 93! Individual members of the congregation are civic-minded and visible in the surrounding community. Our location near Sewanee: The University of the South gives us access to interesting programs, lectures, concerts, and other enriching activities.

What if I'm not a Christian?
If you are interested in the faith of the church and the fellowship of the Lord Jesus Christ, we invite you to enroll in a Bible study and faith exploration known as the Catechism. The layout and structure of the Catechism encourages you to ask the most basic questions, such as: Who is God? Who is Jesus? Who is the Holy Spirit? Who is the Trinity? What is the Church? What is the Bible? And so on. When you visit St. Agnes', ask us about the next opportunity to study the Catechism. We pray that the entire experience will be a blessing to you and nurturing to your faith.
