About Us

Welcome! We are so glad you have visited online and are thankful for your interest in our congregation. As our name indicates we are the Second Presbyterian Church in the city of Greenville, South Carolina, and since 1892 we have sought to be biblically faithful and gospel-driven as we minister from our home in the historic West End.

We love the Bible. We are unashamedly committed to the Bible, believing the Scriptures of the Old and New Testament to be inerrant and infallible and our only rule for faith and practice.

We are Confessional by affirming the great truths of the Protestant Reformation. Our officers affirm the theology of the Westminster Confession of Faith and Catechisms as the best understanding of Holy Scripture.

We are Presbyterian, being governed by elders according to the New Testament example. We are also a founding congregation of the Presbyterian Church in America, the largest Bible-believing Presbyterian denomination in the English speaking world.

We delight in knowing God through the "ordinary means of grace" consisting of preaching, the sacraments and prayer – these being the principle ways God blesses His people through his church by the power of the Holy Spirit.

We love to worship God by gathering each Sunday to actively participate in services that are regulated by the Word and which are full of the best songs of praise from two millennia of Christendom. Our corporate worship is about the edified mind and the reverent heart celebrating God's sovereign grace in life's joy and sorrow. Our church is committed to expository preaching and we love to begin and end each Lord's Day together with the Household of Faith.

We are passionate about the Great Commission as we share our faith through evangelism and missions, supporting over 20 missionary families, including several that have gone forth from our congregation. We also participate and actively support a variety of institutions involved in local missions and gospel endeavor.

We are a family and we are committed to one another. We believe in the biblical principle of the communion of the saints. As such we are deliberately not "program-driven" but intentionally seek to foster genuine community through Christian love, service and fellowship. Our Senior Minister is the Dr. Richard D. Phillips.

Leadership

Richard Phillips

Dr. Richard Davis Phillips, Moderator of the Session Richard Davis Phillips became the twelfth Senior Minister of the Second Presbyterian Church of Greenville in July, 2007. He came to faith in Jesus Christ at age 30, surrendering his life to the Savior in response to the preaching of God’s Word. He soon was leading evangelistic Bible studies at the college where he was teaching and, after a few years, received God’s call to enter the gospel ministry. He attended Westminster Theological Seminary in Philadelphia, PA and after graduation joined the pastoral staff of the church where he came to faith, Tenth Presbyterian Church of Philadelphia, PA. There, Rick was mentored by the well-known Bible teacher, Dr. James Montgomery Boice, and began his calling as a weekly preacher of God’s Word. After serving at Tenth Presbyterian from 1995-2002, Dr. Phillips accepted the call to be Senior Minister of First Presbyterian Church of Coral Springs, FL. After five years there, he moved to Greenville to serve our church in 2007. Dr. Phillips describes his ministry as centering on three “P”s: preaching, praying, and pastoring. He is devoted to expository preaching, which is the teaching of whole books of the Bible week-by-week. His ministry is widely heard on the radio and the internet and Dr. Phillips is frequently called upon to speak at conferences on the Bible and Reformed theology. He further serves the church by authoring books, with over twenty-five currently in print. Among his many activities, he serves on the board and council of the Alliance of Confessing Evangelicals, the council of The Gospel Coalition, and the board of trustees of Westminster Theological Seminary. Together with Philip Graham Ryken, he is series coeditor of the Reformed Expository Commentary series. In addition to the Master of Divinity degree from Westminster Theological Seminary, Dr. Phillips holds degrees from Greenville Presbyterian Theological Seminary (Doctor of Divinity), the University of Pennsylvania (M.B.A.) and the University of Michigan (B.A.). Rick is married to the former Sharon Wilkey, whom he met at church in Philadelphia. Sharon is a homemaker, author, and home-schooling mother. They have an active family of five children: Hannah, Matthew, Jonathan, Ellie and Lydia.

What Members Say

David shared their experience Dec 2016

I attended Second Church from 1979-83, with my family of four, when my sister and I were in high school. Paul and Georgia Settle were officiating then. The last time I was there was in 1993, while attending my 10 yr reunion. Although I have not been able to come back, living hundreds of miles away in West Virginia, the best memories of my young life were attending there. I am proud to have been part of such a historical, God-centered church. May God continue to bless this church, its ministers, and all who shall attend. David P. Casey Wheeling, WV 740-579-2949
