What to Expect

What are services like?
Worship in the Anglo-Catholic tradition is liturgical, in that it follows an ordered and predictable pattern. Our liturgy engages us in the fullness of our humanity, body and soul, by means of visible signs and symbols that appeal to our sight, hearing, smell, touch, and taste. For this reason, our worship is deeply and richly sensual, making full use of music, incense, candles, vestments, sacred images, and ceremonial pageantry as the vehicles through which our hearts and minds are lifted to the unseen God.

What is the community like?
Like most Anglo-Catholic parishes, we have a very diverse congregation. We're made up of people of all ages, races, and walks of life, drawn together by the love of God and committed to bearing witness to the Catholic Faith in the Episcopal Church.

What if I'm not a Christian?
Come and see! Visitors and seekers are always welcome.

While the liturgies at Saint Stephen's are formal (and absolutely beautiful), the clergy and the people who attend St. Stephen's are anything but formal - they're warm, friendly and inclusive. It is a gorgeous church, devoted to glorifying God through beauty in all ways - through the physical building, through the liturgy, the music, the choir and by reaching out to the larger community around the church, with a ministry to Brown University students and by hosting a Soup Kitchen, which they've managed to keep going, modifying for safety, throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. Note - Father Alexander left St. Stephen's in 2019 - the new Rector is a young (35), energetic, intelligent, warm and insightful priest, Father Benjamin Straley. Father Benjamin's bio is available on St. Stephen's website, https://www.sstephens.org/clergy-staff-vestry.
