What to Expect

What are services like?
Is there a place for everyone to be involved musically at Redeemer? Absolutely! The Scriptures are filled with instruction to sing praise to God. Even Jesus sang hymns with his disciples. Redeemer includes the singing of psalms, hymns and spiritual songs (Eph. 5:19, Col. 3:16) at nearly every gathering - from worship services to leadership meetings, retreats and fellowship groups. In fact, artistic expression is such an important part of everyday life that God commands us all to engage in it, whether as professionals or amateurs, and to do so with joy (Let the nations be glad and sing for joy! Psalm 67:4), originality (Sing to the Lord a new song. Psalm 96:1), and intellect (I will sing with my spirit, but I will also sing with my mind. I Cor. 14:15). Click on the links to the right for more information about specific ways musicians can be involved in the Worship and Music life of Redeemer.

What is the community like?
Community Groups are the primary place where you are known and cared for at Redeemer. It is within these small communities that men and women can build personal relationships and practice applying the gospel to their lives. Each group expects to experience Jesus Christ in its midst, enabling participants to be transformed through mutual ministry and to experience life in the family of God. Composed of six to twelve people, groups meet in homes and offices throughout the city. All groups are led by trained lay-leaders from the congregation who receive continued oversight and support from our pastoral staff. Groups generally meet two to four times a month for worship, bible study, fellowship and prayer. Many groups also participate in monthly service projects or social events, in place of a regular meeting. These groups provide sanctuary from the pressures and anxieties of life in the city and facilitate the formation of new friendships. Community groups are places where we can be revitalized and strengthened as we seek to reflect the love of Jesus Christ to our fellow New Yorkers. As God made us for community, we need others to help us apply the gospel to our lives. Our hope is that everyone who attends our church will be involved in a Community Group.

What if I'm not a Christian?
Skeptics Welcome Are you one of the many people in our congregation processing doubts about Christianity? Or are you a seasoned believer who would like to become better prepared to share your faith? I think the first thing that draws a person to Redeemer is probably the high quality of teaching. Tim Keller, the head pastor, is very well known as an engaging preacher. In general all of the teaching and preaching is challenging, relevant to life in New York City, and has something to offer both the intellectually questioning seeker as well as Christians. The West side evening services combine hymns with current worship songs; the morning service has traditional hymns.

I visited Redeemer West Side for the first time last Sunday. Pastor Keller talked about when the Babylonian King sentenced Shadrach & co. to burn because they refused to worship the King's gods and how God rescued them because of their faith by sending Christ into the \fiery furnace\" to protect them. I really enjoyed how Pastor Keller explained small details like how the King's gods represented pluralism and Babylonian culture and then related those details to life in New York City. (that is

Redeemer Presbyterian Church in NYC is doing great things to improve and empower the Christian writers in the city. On Thursday, October 13th at 7 pm, the Redeemer Writers Group met for a time of fellowship, learning and practice. The evening was hosted by Christian author Caroline Coleman, who presented the group with successful tactics on how to evoke emotion from the reader when writing fiction stories. She also expanded on how to be an effective author without losing sight of one’s faith. Some of the group’s attendees are published authors, some are aspiring authors and others just like to write for fun. Coleman spoke about various types of emotion and had the group write short story examples of each emotion She also gave advice on how to improve their writing as they shared what they had written.
