The five years I served as your pastor were the best years in ministry for me. My wife, Nancy, passed away 18 years ago. Our two children are grown. Oliver is 47, a nurse practitioner, works and lives in Louisville, Ky. He and his wife, Natasha, have a son, Sasha, who is 11 years old. Hilary, our daughter, is 49 years old, a clothes designer working in LA and renting a home there. Recently, she bought a home in Louisville, Ky. Both kids came home to roost. I am in Nevada City, California, in Northern California, the Sierra Foothills. I now am 80 years old.
Since retiring, the past twenty years I have been a volunteer at a Quaker high school working farm, 230 acres. Here, I married my second wife, Karen. She passed away over a year ago. She was a retired teacher who taught preschool for 40 years and has four beautiful grown children. I still rent here, though the school was closed a year ago and recently was purchased by the local Native Tribe, the Nisenan. They were decimated here in the 1850s when gold was found (our highway coming into here is Route 49). Like Somerset, we are town surrounded by the forests and hills and water ways. The Nisenan accepted my lease so I get to stay here and love that.
But I want to share when all this began, serving your congregation, THAT was truly the best years I ever had as a parish pastor. Jean Christiansen came on board too, as a Rural Nurse and we had a close relationship with five other churches in the area doing joint programs together.
I hope the years have been good for you, that you are a healthy, vibrant faith community, continuing to serve within a vibrant, lush area of Kentucky, and that you have a good relationship with other faiths in the area and multiple connections within community life. I say this with joy in my heart and an ache in my soul for how my spirit was nourished and grounded while serving your beautiful congregation. All the people, both within our fellowship and within the community, and those from other faiths that we joins hands and voices together, and the acts of ministry we rolled our sleeves up to take on. I am grateful to God for those years and the grounding experiences in ministry I had
and for all the memories still alive in my heart for those five plus years and the fellowship we had with all you precious souls! Blessings and Peace as we enter this month of December, the magical time of year, the light in the darkness, and the coming birth of a precious baby!
Bless all of you this Christmas Season and soon to be
the New Year! Dean Olson
