Luz Para o Mundo

About Us

Luz para o mundo: A light to the world.

Luz Para o Mundo (a.k.a. Light to the World Foundation) is a nondenominational Christian church in Astoria, NY. Our mission is to be a light in our neighborhood, our city, and to all the world, showing the love of Christ and shining with His light.

The church was founded in 2006 by Pastor Rubens Andrade of Belo Horizonte, Brazil. Pastor Rubens and many of the other leaders and members of this church have come to the U.S. from Brazil with a special call in their hearts to share God's love and His Word in this community in New York City.

In addition to our services filled with vibrant, passionate praise and worship and the Word preached with love and true revelation, we have several ministries including children's church, women's ministries, small groups, leadership training, and social / fellowship events for teens, singles, and families.

What to Expect

What are services like?
Our services are lively and inviting, from the opening prayer to the close. Prayers, songs, preaching, and announcements are all in Portuguese with translation to English available for those who need it. Once a month we celebrate the Lord's Supper. Kids participate in the opening prayer and worship, but have their own school, teachings, and playtime during the preaching of the Word. Oftentimes testimonies are shared and special prayers offered up on request. Occasionally, a guest preacher from Brazil or elsewhere will bring a special word, usually in Portuguese.

What is the community like?
There are lots of families with children of all ages; couples and singles; biracial / bicultural couples and families; some elderly as well. While the congregation is predominantly Brazilian, it is becoming increasingly multi-cultural. The Brazilian cultural values of community, fellowship, and enjoyment in social settings is reflected in our many after-service lunches, fundraisers, and other special events. The children's ministry is strong and offers sound teaching as well as fun activities and kid-friendly events such as Vacation Bible School.

What if I'm not a Christian?
What I would say to a non-Christian, especially someone who has never or rarely gone to church (or someone who is not Brazilian), is that if nothing else, you could think of it as a cultural experience, and you should come expecting to taste and enjoy the welcoming warmth of this loving community. The love of God is the most important thing, so we hope that all visitors who come, regardless of their own faith background, will have an experience of that love, and not just Brazilian culture, but the culture of Christ.
