What to Expect

What are services like?
Yes, it's true, Gentle Spirit Christian Church meets outdoors, rain or shine, every Sunday at 10:30am, 52 weeks a year — except in cases of extreme weather, when we worship exclusively online — in picnic Pavilion 2 in Candler Park. Once you pull into the 1500 McLendon Avenue NE entrance you'll see us on the right about halfway down the parking lot.

What is the community like?
We are a fellowship dedicated to the spreading the Gospel of Jesus the Christ to all people in an open, affirming and inclusive manner. Our outreach includes HIV/AIDS programs, ministries for the homeless, LGBTQ+ affirming ministries, and participation in those activities which promote social justice and equality for all. Our mission is to bring the message of redemption and grace to those people who have been victims of oppression, rejection and misinformation and to assure them they are true heirs in the realm of God.

What if I'm not a Christian?
We envision an inclusive church community committed to worshipping God freely in an atmosphere of grace, forgiveness, unconditional love and individual growth.

Leadership

Rev. Paul M. Turner

Rev. Paul M. Turner
Senior Pastor

A native midwesterner who was raised in the United Methodist Church, Rev. Turner has felt a call to pastoral ministry since early childhood. He founded Gentle Spirit Christian Church in 1998 after serving as clergy in the Universal Fellowship of Metropolitan Community Churches in Ohio and Atlanta. Since his arrival in Atlanta in 1994, he has been at the forefront of leadership and activism for the LGBTQ+ community and the community at large, volunteering for and serving on the boards of organizations focused on civic engagement, transgender identity, homelessness, hunger, unemployment, health services and mental health. Rev. Turner serves as Editor-in-Chief of Whosoever and is a longtime umpire in the Amateur Softball Association of America, where he has called both slow- and fast-pitch softball games in several divisions and has served as board president for the Southern Crescent Umpires Association. He and his husband, Bill, celebrated their 39th anniversary in June 2021, the same month that the Supreme Court made marriage equality the law of the land, and they legally tied the knot on November 21, 2015.
