First Presbyterian Church is congregation of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A) serving Christ from Sylacauga, Alabama.

Our mission is to worship God and witness to His love by responding with compassion and encouragement to the needs of others. We proclaim Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior and accept His call to share the gospel. We believe the Word of God and expressed in Holy Scripture, and we proclaim the power of obedience to His will. Being empowered by the Holy Spirit, we seek God's will for our lives and His directions for our church. Ever mindful of His blessings, we commit our lives and talents to His services.

What to Expect

What are services like?
There are many different styles of worship. At First Presbyterian Church we believe God in Christ calls us to offer worship that reflect our Reformed heritage. We follow a traditional service with prayers, song, scripture, sermon, sacraments, and contemplative silence. The service typically lasts from one hour to one hour and fifteen minutes. Christian worship joyfully ascribes all praise and honor, glory and power to the Triune God. In worship the people of God acknowledge God present in the world and in their lives. As they respond to God's claim and redemptive action in Jesus Christ, believers are transformed and renewed. In worship the faithful offer themselves to God and are equipped for God's service in the world.

What is the community like?
First Presbyterian Church is warm and welcoming congregation. We are happy to welcome visitors in a way that doesn't smother people, but rather allows for the Holy Spirit to move. We worship together, pray for one another, share meals, participate in mission work (mostly local), and enjoy several large events each year. We are engaged and committed to serving Jesus Christ here, from the heart of Sylacauga.

What if I'm not a Christian?
If you are not a Christian, our members, elders, and pastor would love to help provide a space for you to learn about the tenets of the Christian faith. We believe the gospel is good news and want everyone to hear it. Many churches try to guilt trip people; preaching hell-fire sermons to scare people into church membership. We don't see Jesus acting that way in the New Testament. Rather, Jesus accepts people unconditionally and simply invites people to join him on an amazing journey that leads to the Kingdom of God.
