We are a diverse congregation committed to our church and community.

At First Congregational Church, God is still speaking. We are striving to listen and act as followers of Jesus Christ.

Our Services

What are services like?
Service starts at 10 with announcements (we're an active church) and opening hymne. Following time with children, the young ones head on to Sunday School, except on Communion Sunday (first Sunday of the month for us) when the older children are invited to stay for the full service. Following the sermon and communion and a hymne or two more, we wrap up with a postlude organ piece. If you're new to our church, don't stand up to leave when you think you should - there's one more organ piece! Following the postlude, most people stick around for lots of visiting and after-worship treat. Please stay awhile and get to know us, we'd love to get to know you.

What is the community like?
We are an open, diverse and welcoming congregation. We have one church service each Sunday, so everyone has a chance to meet new people and visit with old friends. These brief videos say a lot about who we are. http://www.ucc.org/god-is-still-speaking/ads/

What if I'm not a Christian?
Stillspeaking. It's the shorter form of "God is still speaking," a campaign by the United Church of Christ to remind us that God still has a lot more to say. Since 2004, Stillspeaking has worked with thousands of UCC churches and individuals across the country to make religion relevant again and to extend an extravagant welcome to all—because no matter who you are, or where you are on life's journey, you're welcome here. Here at the United Church of Christ.

Eldonna Hazen

Eldonna Hazen

Eldonna was raised in the American Lutheran Church, but after coming out and getting disconnected from the Church, she sought a different church where she and her partner, Cathy Noth, (pronounced with a long o) could be open and rekindle her relationship with the Church. When she decided to pursue the ministry, she and Cathy looked for a denomination where their sexuality would not prohibit either of them from being both open and supported. The United Church of Christ has been not only welcoming but also matches their beliefs in other areas, such as social justice. Eldonna answered her call to ministry in 2002 and attended United Theological Seminary of the Twin Cities, completing her Master of Divinity degree in May, 2005. Eldonna and Cathy have an elementary school-age son, Spencer, and twin toddlers, Aiden and Carlyn. Eldonna is proud that she is able to sleep through the night and gets up at 2 a.m. to do a paper-route side job. This isn’t your child’s paper route, we’re talking a thousand papers delivered to vendors all over south central Madison. Reflecting her Midwestern roots, you can always find butter, eggs, pepper jack cheese, bleu cheese salad dressing and soy milk in her fridge. Finally, Eldonna loves to bowl, starting in a mother/daughter league and later bowling with Cathy. Her favorite activity is being on the boat in the middle of the lake with her family.
