First Christian Church

About Us

Christian, DOC, family, youth, children, Young Adult, welcoming, open

Here at First Christian Church Baton Rouge we affectionately refer to ourselves as FCCBRLA. We are proud of our denomination, The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), and our region, The Great River Region of the Christian Church (DOC). We are unique in that we are the only Disciples congregation in the Baton Rouge area.
We value youth and children; we support families of all arrangements; we believe in reaching out and connecting with the wider community and we are committed to growing together spiritually. We are proud of our congregation, where we have come from, and we also strive to push our congregation to be as faithful as possible, growing with one another in Christ and in our relationships with God. We hope you will join us to find out what our faith family is all about!

What to Expect

What are services like?
In general, we are “low church.” That is, we do not employ a great deal of liturgy. However, we do have communion every week and that is very important to us. We are seriously reverent at all of our worship services, but we like to have fun too. At our 8:30 a.m. service, our ministers preach from the floor and do not wear robes. The service is traditional but informal. Our 10:50 a.m. service is more likely to see our ministers in the pulpit with robes, but not always. This service includes most of our children and youth so we include a children's message and offer children's church. We bring in our choir, sometimes our contemporary worship band, share videos as always offer communion each week. We also have special worship services throughout the year including Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, Ecumenical Thanksgiving, Pentecost and others. We hope you will find one of our worship services meaningful and fulfilling!

What is the community like?
We are family oriented and accept family arrangements of all kinds. We are inter-generational and have groups for all ages. Children's ministry, youth groups, young adult groups, women's Bible study, Men's Bible study and a group for those over 60 called "Lots of Living Left"!

What if I'm not a Christian?
We are welcoming of all belief systems. We strive to be a movement for wholeness in a world broken by those condemning any who are different from them. Jesus is at the center of our worship and the way that we most fully experience God. However, we are welcoming of seekers and believers of all kinds. If you would like to be in relationship with God, we invite you to join our family of faith as we travel this journey together.
