Who We Are

We're the church the devil doesn't want you to know about.

Over the last few years Faith United Church has laid aside a lot of tired tradition and pompous pretense. We have no quarrel with traditional congregations and we're not putting down those who like a lot of production. We've just simplified everything so that what we're left with is an approach that is more concerned with authenticity than perfection and more focused on being relevant than growing larger. We've discovered that there are lots of folks who just want to Worship Jesus, learn from the Bible, make a few friends, and help out where they can. Maybe you're one of those folks.

Faith United Church is made up of regular, every day, "Flint-type" folks. If you're in the Flint-area, chances are you already know some of us. We live mostly in southern Genesee County throughout Flint, Grand Blanc, Swartz Creek, and Mundy Township. We are united by our common desire to follow the teachings of Jesus Christ authentically in all areas of our lives. We don't claim to be perfect, or superior. We're just trying to live what we believe by being good neighbors, raising our children well, working hard, managing our finances, and showing love and respect to everyone.

What to Expect

What are services like?
We're not trying to be cute or tricky, but we really like to avoid categories when it comes to the way we Worship at Faith United Church. We have a live band and a lot of Sundays our music is loud and full of energy. Other Sundays we dig into our heritage and use some of the old-school hymns of the Church. Sometimes we mix styles, or use updated versions of old songs. We also use a lot of prayer, Scripture reading, video, PowerPoint, and anything else we can think of to help us Worship in a way that we hope honors Jesus Christ.

What is the community like?
Faith United Church is a "come as you are," congregation. We're casual, but never careless. We take Jesus Christ, the Bible, prayer, Worship and serving our community very seriously ...but, we don't take ourselves all that seriously. We're simply a group of folks who are doing our very best to follow the teachings of Jesus Christ. We’re not flashy or fancy, and we're not into big productions, but if you’re looking for authentic love, friendly people, relevant teaching, and a chance to pitch in and help out in the community, we might just be perfect for you. Those of us who are part of Faith United Church believe God is leading us to build a Church that is characterized by: Faith in Jesus Christ that is authentic, applying His teachings to all aspects of life, while extending Grace to those who fail and respect to those who disagree. Worship that is casual without being careless, focused on Jesus Christ, and unhindered by the traditions or expectations of people. Relationships that are strong because of the Holy Spirit within us and our common pursuit of Jesus Christ, an ever-growing and expanding fellowship. Ministries and programs that meet actual needs in ourselves and others in our community. A reputation as a place in our community where people are treated with love and respect, and given relevant Biblical truth.

Leadership

Steve Wood

Pastor Steve Wood was born right here in Flint, Michigan in 1962 and graduated from Ainsworth High School. He answered his call into the ministry in 1981 and entered Oakland City University in southern Indiana. While attending Oakland City as a Biblical Studies major, Pastor Steve served as Youth Director at First General Baptist Church of Mt. Carmel, Illinois. It was also at Oakland City that he met Melanie Whitten and the two were married in December, 1984. They have three children, Mallory - born in 1988 (married Jordan Smith in 2010), Caleb - born in 1992, and Isaac - born in 1993. In September of 1984, Pastor Steve returned to Flint and assumed the position of Minister of Youth and Education at First General Baptist Church. He served there until the summer of 1991 when he and his family moved to Evansville, Indiana. In Evansville, Pastor Steve became Minister of Christian Education at 12th Avenue General Baptist Church, which later became Westwood General Baptist when they relocated to a new facility in 1996. He served there until 2000 when he was elected Pastor of Henderson General Baptist Church in Kentucky. After a short stay in Henderson, the Wood family moved back home to Flint in February, 2001. He has been pastor of Faith United Church since that time. Pastor Steve was ordained by the Michigan Association of General Baptists in 1985. He graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Biblical Studies from Oakland City University in 1993. He is currently pursuing a Master's Degree in Christian Leadership through Grand Canyon University. Pastor Steve is a casual, "jeans & t-shirts," guy who doesn't take himself too seriously, but is very serious about Jesus and His Word. He is an absolute, true-blue University of Michigan fan, as well as being nuts for the Detroit Tigers and Detroit Red Wings. He likes to fish and has been known to play his guitar much louder than a man his age is supposed to. He writes, "Jesus Christ is the source of my life; Melanie is the love of my life; Mallory, Caleb and Isaac are the joy of my life; and helping anyone who wants to get to know Jesus better is the passion of my life."
