Jan Stewart Tolbert
Jan Tolbert- Q&A
What place you would like to visit before you die...and why?
I would love to go to Russia to see the great architecture, the Russian Orthodox Churches amaze me. I would also love to go to Italy to see the great works of art and sculpture.
I am not too picky when it comes to food and I go through food fad phases. Right now I love turkey deli sandwiches from Publix. Nine grain bread, turkey, toast it, lettuce, tomatoes, green peppers, oil and vinegar. Diet Pepsi - Yum!
Your greatest indulgence?
Pedicures……it's not like I couldn't do it myself. It's just so wonderful to have someone else make my feet feel good and look good…..and smell good.
What's on your reading list?
Right now I am reading Ken Follett's Fall of Giants. I read his Pillars of the Earth and was hooked. After my trip to Israel this summer I read James Michener's, The Source. That is a must read. Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand was a recent read that I was not able to put down. The most scholarly book I have read in a while was The Righteous Mind: Why Good People Are Divided by Politics and Religion by Jonathan Haidt. Very interesting read.
What was your childhood ambition?
I wanted to be the first female professional basketball player. I also wanted to be a teacher, preacher, lawyer, rock-star. I had a lot of ambition.
Where do you see Christ at work in the world today?
A lot of people will think I am crazy but I see the Spirit of Christ at work in the declining membership of mainline protestant churches in the USA. Being the dominant religion has made us fat and lazy. I see Christ at work, calling the Mainline Churches to get back to the unapologetic business of serving Christ by serving the least of these - of giving our lives away, for Christ's sake.
