What to Expect

What are services like?
When you visit us at Calvary Chapel Santa Cruz you will find folks comfortable and casual. Some will be in shorts, while other may have slacks, pressed shirts, or dresses. Feel free to come comfortable, yet modest. The Worship time will be a mixture of contemporary praise and worship along with some traditional hymns. Some songs will be fast and maybe a little loud while others will be soft and meditative – we find all of this in the Psalms! Our Worship is not a concert, but a combined choir of all who attend, singing to an audience of One. The preaching time is primarily a teaching time through the Word of God. Calvary Chapels are known worldwide for their style of teaching that is verse-by-verse through every book of the Bible. Although there may be times that we have a topical study, the primary focus is to give the whole counsel of God’s Word in a way that can be understood, is applicable to where you are, and will be challenging you to grow in the grace and in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

What is the community like?
The easy answer would be that we are: Individuals on a journey together in fellowship with Jesus Christ; A group diverse in age, race, socio-economic standing, religious experience and non-experience; Singles, marrieds, singles again, with kids, no kids and kids grown up; People that enjoy being challenged in our everyday life by the solid Truths of the Word of God. We face issues and problems, tragedies and victories, together looking for answers that are true and relevant. We find these answers in a real and growing relationship with Jesus Christ the Son of God, being empowered and directed by the Holy Spirit of God.

What if I'm not a Christian?
If you are not yet a believer in the Lord Jesus Christ, we would warmly welcome you and encourage you to get to know Him and His life-saving love. We're here to help you on your journey.

Leadership

Matt Valencia

Matt Valencia

Husband to DeAnna; Dad to Rebekah, Matthew, Josiah, Elisha and Abigail; and now Pastor of Calvary Chapel Santa Cruz. Matt “grew up” in ministry at Calvary Chapel West Covina under Pastor Raul Ries. He graduated from Azusa Pacific where he met his wife, DeAnna. He then taught and coached at a public high school when the Lord began to call him to the ministry of a pastor. Matt served as an assistant pastor for Don McClure at CC San Jose and then moved on from CCSJ to work as a teacher/principal of a school for students incarcerated for drugs and alcohol. In 2001, the Lord led him to begin a new and fresh work, planting Calvary Chapel Gilroy where he pastored until 2012 when he came to Santa Cruz to minister. Matt is passionate about Jesus, equipping the saints, his family, and 49ers football. Ministry keeps him desperate and humbled since he is always in over his head.
