Buffalo Presbyterian Church

Where God is changing lives!

About Us

Every Sunday, we begin our worship service with: “Welcome to Buffalo Presbyterian Church, EPC, where God is changing lives.” We say these words with conviction and joy, because we see evidence of their truth each week in our church and in our members. The Holy Spirit is alive and at work at Buffalo Presbyterian Church.

Organized in 1756, Buffalo Presbyterian Church predates the United States of America and is one of the two oldest churches in Guilford County. Our sanctuary and cemetery are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Seventeen pastors have served Buffalo since its founding. The church is located in Greensboro—in the heart of Piedmont North Carolina—an easy drive to both the Atlantic Ocean and the Appalachian Mountain range.

The Rev. Dr. David Caldwell, Buffalo’s first pastor, served from 1768 until 1820, retiring at the age of 95. He lived 100 years and is buried in our cemetery next to his wife Rachel, the daughter of Rev. Alexander Craighead, a pioneer Presbyterian minister from the Charlotte area. Dr. Caldwell was a member of the conventions that framed the first state constitution and approved the U.S. Constitution. His famous theological and classical “Log College” educated young men throughout the colonial South, six of whom became governors, and many who became ministers, physicians, and educators.

Inspired by Dr. Caldwell’s commitment to education, we have recently founded Buffalo Academy, a classical, Christian school to open in the fall of 2022.

While our founding and 265-year history are unique distinctions—of which we are rightly proud—these days we are focused on discerning God’s plan for our future and where He is leading Buffalo Presbyterian Church.

We welcome your visit as we seek to know the one true living God and Jesus Christ whom He sent and make him known to all people and generations.

What to Expect

What are services like?
Buffalo Presbyterian Church has a traditional sanctuary service each Sunday at 11am. We begin each service with a recognition that 'God is changing lives at Buffalo'. Organ, piano, choir, traditional liturgy and hymns sung to the glory of God. Immediately following the Sunday service the 'After service, service' begins outside on the steps where members and visiting worshipers dwell and meet, catch up and enjoy fellowship together.

What is the community like?
A friendly and welcoming congregation at all stages of our faith walk with many opportunities for fellowship, engagement, study and mission.

What if I'm not a Christian?
You are invited! Buffalo Presbyterian welcomes seekers in our services and church school. We also host the multi-week Alpha program (https://alphausa.org/about/) specifically for seekers to ask questions, explore and discuss faith at times once or twice during the year.

Leadership

Brian Marsh

Brian Marsh
Senior Pastor

Brian values a traditional service. 'I have noticed the interesting dynamic that many of our young families still gravitate to the traditional service. I think this speaks to the value and beauty that it still has from the familiar choir and organ music coupled with the liturgy and rhythm of worship that is found in most traditional services. There is a yearning for worship to remind the worshiper of the holiness of our God, and the joy that can be found in a Sunday morning experience that is distinctly different from what they experience the other six days of the week.' Pastor Brian Marsh answered the call to lead the congregation of Buffalo Presbyterian on February 5, 2023. Attracted to our focus on missions and our community he writes “There are many connection points for me as I think about Buffalo Presbyterian Church. First, with the opening of the school [ Buffalo Academy ], I see a church that desires to be intentional with the next generation as well as seeking to meet families exactly where they are. Family faith formation is on my heart as well.” Brian was drawn to Buffalo Church as a church that sought a Teaching Elder “not to lead everything, but to empower the church to step forward and lead. That is part of my belief in ministry. The church will truly be a stronger and better witness to the life changing power of our Savior, Jesus Christ, if many people are involved in the leadership of the church and its functions. Finally, I see a church that is serious about how they use the gifts God has given them to impact the lives of others. It seems like Buffalo Presbyterian has a heart for missions and outreach, and I too share in that desire.”
