Hi! I’m Sam Hicks, and I serve as the Youth Leader at Jordan Light Missionary Baptist Church. I started working with children and youth in church when I was 16 years old. I’m not going to tell you how many years ago that was—just trust me when I say I’ve been doing this for a while! 😂 I’ve also spent over 15 years as a public school educator, so working with young people has been a huge part of my life. I am definitely not the youth leader who plans the fun and then stands on the sidelines watching! If there’s a game, I’m probably playing. If there’s a competition, I probably want to win. And if something involves costumes, music, food, getting messy, staying up way too late, or an idea that makes someone say, “Sam, are you sure about this?”—there’s a pretty good chance I planned it! I’m high-energy, a little loud, and a firm believer that following Jesus doesn’t have to be boring. I want our kids to laugh, be silly, make memories, build friendships, and actually be excited about coming to church. But underneath all the games, crazy activities, lock-ins, and fun is the reason we do all of it—Jesus. I want every young person who walks through our doors to know they are loved, they belong, and there is a place for them here. My goal is to give our youth a safe place to be themselves, ask questions, grow in their faith, and build a real relationship with Jesus. If we laugh until our sides hurt and make some unforgettable memories along the way, even better! And if we make a little bit of a mess doing it…well, we’ll clean it up eventually!

I am Baptist, born and raised. Jordan Light has been my home church my whole life. Even when I walked away as a young adult (as many youngsters do), this is the church God called me back to. When I chose to come home, it felt like I had never left. This congregation is FAMILY.
