  • After 125 years, First Christian, Whittier closed its doors on December 31, 2019. I have been a member since my baptism in 1986, and attended before then for at least 4 years. I had the privilege of collating, identifying, and boxing for preservation the physical records of this church as an archival intern. FCW was a vibrant, active, and integral part of the Whittier community, which spread the gospel of Jesus Christ to many people, not just locally, but all around the world. In one word, I would describe our former church as welcoming. No one who walked through our doors was a stranger. We weren't exactly "preachy", but if you wanted to know about our beliefs (which were varied at times) we would take the time to teach Christianity as we saw it. But, you were always welcome and accepted as a member of our community. FCW is gone now, but its members now belong to other congregations, and some to none at all. Sometimes, there can only be one home. But we move on, living according to Christ's example and his commission, to make disciples of all nations and his great commandment, to love God, and to love our neighbor as ourselves. RIP, First Christian Church Whittier, California: 1895-2019.
