About Us

Grand Rapids’ downtown Presbyterian church. Absolutely everyone is welcome.

Absolutely everyone is welcome. We don’t assume you to be Christian; we only hope to be Christian towards you.

Founded in 1861, Westminster is a metropolitan church in every sense of the word. From our location in the heart of Grand Rapids, we attract a diverse congregation from all parts of the city. We believe that this diversity is one of our greatest strengths. Westminster Presbyterian Church is a community of Christians committed to the common purpose of praising God, learning from God’s Word, and offering a service and witness to our community and the world.

What to Expect

What are services like?
Our services have a traditional, liturgical form with genuine warmth and thoughtful, emotional resonance that empowers genuine human connection. In our understanding, the audience of worship is God. As such, we do our best not to make it a performance, but rather a participatory, community experience that uses traditional forms and contemporary language. And music is a foundational part of our worship. From our Sanctuary Choir and Westminster Winds ensemble to symphonic orchestras and guitar solos, Westminster is a congregation united in praising God through music and song. Each service at Westminster lasts about an hour.

What is the community like?
We often describe ourselves as a “community of exiles.” Many people who have come to Westminster have been ostracized or marginalized from some place in their lives, and this seems to be part of who we are. We’re far from perfect at offering a safe place, but it is our deepest hope that we might pass along the solace we’ve found as a community. We advocate for all who worship with us—regardless of history, lifestyle, gender, race, sexual orientation, etc.—to have a safe and welcoming place to worship the risen Jesus Christ. Westminster is a place where people can be free to be afraid. You won’t be judged here. We are open and welcoming towards members of the LGBTQ community, many of whom are longtime members at Westminster.

What if I'm not a Christian?
Because we’re a Christian church, absolutely everyone is welcome. We don’t assume or presume you to be Christian; we only hope to be Christian towards you. In our culture, there’s a lot of public misuse of Christian and religious language; we hope that won’t delude or exclude you from joining us. You can be angry at God, not think there’s a God, afraid of dying, going through a divorce, completely upset about church, or completely excited to worship. If you’re any of these things, you’re one among many who are just like you and are sitting in the pew on Sunday. No matter who you are or what you carry with you through the door, we hope to welcome you, just as we ourselves have felt welcomed. We hope and pray that we will serve you with Christ-like love, humility, and integrity.
