About Us

Be the Church!

Communitas NYC exists to develop followers of Jesus by growing in our love for God and others, living in authentic community, and serving open-handedly with our lives. God revealed his plan to redeem the world by entering his creation and serving, teaching and loving within the context of the human experience. We refer to this as the incarnation. God's rescue operation required his own immersion into humanity, and we believe he invites us to follow this example. Our ultimate aim is that people would enter into and grow in a relationship with Jesus. To accomplish this, we focus on three things. First, we seek to make a priority what Jesus identified as the greatest commandment- to love God and others. Second, we purpose to live in authentic community. Third, we intend to follow Jesus' example of serving. Jesus said that he did not come to be served, but to serve.

Worship and teaching where the homeless are welcome!

What to Expect

What are services like?
Communitas believes we are called to "be the church" rather than "go to church". We are active all week long being the church. So on Sundays we gather simply to celebrate the presence of Jesus in our lives, through music, teaching and interacting. We are very casual and friendly! We meet in the chapel of the NYC Rescue Mission. We are learning what it means to be in true and authentic community with homeless men and women of NYC.

What is the community like?
We long to be what our name means: "People on a dangerous mission" - giving our lives fully to Jesus! But that's a process! We are not perfect, but we are caring, genuine, supportive and fun!

What if I'm not a Christian?
We hope you'll find this a good place to ask questions and to explore faith and spirituality without intimidation. Others have!

My experience at Communitas started out great but thank God I’m no longer in a vulnerable situation and has moved out from being homeless and loss of hope to a better life and real friends supporters.. I had to find out the hard way that these people Chris Mayes especially was a person who is not only hypothetical but very condescending and likes to make it seem that you’re nothing without her help.. Also when she falls out with you she shares your personal business to other residents and likes to talk badly about you to people and also throws situations you share with her up in your face when you’re defending yourself against her judgment towards you.. I don’t recommend this church and thank God I got my own place and peace within my self and I’ve become a better person throughout everything and has good genuine people in my life but everything is a learning experience and certain people are taken out of your life for a reason

Communitas is a group of people who truly love God and love others. No pretense. Come as you are. You will feel welcome and completely free to ask questions. If you are looking for a place to remain anonymous, this probably isn't the best fit for you. If you hope to find a place where you feel loved rather than judged, you should visit. Come explore who Jesus is, what the bible seems to teach, and how that is relevant to your life today.

My faith journey began around the time I became a teen. I had so many questions and I attended several churches in my hometown. Back then my experience was not of openness and willingness to discuss the tough questions of life. After placing it on the back burner for several years and moving to NYC, I began to feel G-d pursuing me. I attended a megachurch but it was still not the right "fit". After surrendering my faith to Jesus anyway, Communitas was the first church I was "lead" to. My Jewish husband connected very quickly and within 2 weeks we were hooked. The people are genuine, the faith is real, they are open and welcoming. We feel that we are part of a big family and community is important in a big city like this!

This was the right church at the right time for me and my family at this point in our lives . A real Jesus church . No legalism and the people are real and genuine . They really care about people while building relationships and pointing people toward Jesus . I don`t feel enslaved any more by rules and regulations but feel free in Christ . Fear God , Love Jesus , and work out your own salvation with fear and trembling .

On my first visit to communitas everyone was very sweet and friendly, I felt very welcomed. I had been "church hopping" all over New York for almost a year when my husband and I finally tried Communitas. We were looking for community of believers we could get close to and grow in Christ with, and thats exactly what we found. After trying much larger churches, we ultimately are glad to be a part of a new and growing congregation. Everyone knows everyone, and in this large city its so nice to have a place where you can have real community.
