Pastor Timothy White

Washington Cathedral’s story began thirty years ago when Tim White and his wife Jackie moved from Eastern Washington to what was then (and remains) one of the most un-churched areas of the United States: the eastside of Seattle, Washington. Pastor Tim came from a tightly-knit community, he was a third-generation pastor, and he dreamed of building a church that had a small-town feel, where people knew your name and you could just be yourself, without pretense or pressure. Just as importantly, he dreamed of a place where everyone felt accepted right when they walked in the door. The church began small, meeting in Pastor Tim’s home. People far from God drew near, and soon larger venues were needed as more and more people came to hear Pastor Tim’s uplifting message about Jesus that was such an encouragement to them. Years later, God provided a way for Washington Cathedral to purchase and build on the rolling hills of the Sammamish Valley. This came as a challenge and an opportunity. The space was large and the surrounding community becoming more diverse. This brought on a creative idea. Why not open our doors and partner with other missionary-pastors called to serve the many sub-cultures of this community? Why not share our resources so that God can reach more people? Today in addition to our diverse general congregations, pastors attend to people in their own language in our bilingual Spanish Congregation (Esperanza), Korean church, First Nations (Native American) and Brazilian (Videra) church. Together with these congregations we share programing, events, and worship in a beautiful mosaic of God’s diversity. It is a lovely, sometimes messy, “meta” expression of church: beyond a traditional American Christian gathering.
