What people say about Stones River Baptist Church

  • I don't know much about the present day Stones River Church, but my husband was stationed at Sewart AFB in 1963, and we moved into a mobile home park right next to where the church was being built in the Spring of 1963. It was not completely finished when they began services in the new Sanctuary. Is that building still standing and in use? Several people from the park were also attending there at the time. As it was 60 years ago and I didn't keep a journal at the time, I don't recall who the pastor was, but we enjoyed worshiping together and serving there for about 9 months. Another young woman and I sang a duet one Sunday, and I may have been called to play piano a couple of times - as I say - a long time ago. We often thought we would return sometime to see how the church had grown, but life 500 miles away in eastern NC got in the way. I was looking up some info on an ancestor whose name is on the Courthouse of Williamson Co. when I realized it was Smyrna! I guess I could say it was the gathering of people from everywhere that made the church family seem close. We found that same feeling in other churches over the years, and I'm in one here on the Carolina Coast where all are from 'somewhere else' and we're all about making people feel welcome in our "family of God." May God bless you all as you serve Him where you are. Judith Stewart
