About Us

Glorious unity of worship, heaven with the earth...oneness in Christ.

St Sophia Cathedral is an Eastern Orthodox Christian Church within the Greek Archdiocese of America, in the San Francisco Metropolis. While maintaining some of the flavor of Greek culture, our cathedral is also progressive in its welcoming of those who are not of Greek heritage.

What to Expect

What are services like?
Glorious! Like heaven and earth were joined together in unison, giving God worship, thanksgiving and praise.

What is the community like?
The demographic of St Sophia Cathedral is rapidly changing, as we find more and more non-Greeks finding a home in the Eastern Orthodox Christian Faith. St Sophia is quite welcoming of those exploring the Faith once given to the Apostles.

What if I'm not a Christian?
It's OK! We love you very much and God loves you very much! We wish to make you feel as welcome as possible with us. If you're not an Orthodox Christian, we ask that you respectfully refrain from taking communion (what the priest is serving from the chalice with a spoon). Instead, we suggest you get into line with everyone else, and when you get to the priest, tell him, "I'm not Orthodox, but my name is ______. May I please have a blessing?" The priest will then offer a blessing upon your head. As you exit the area, you are welcome to take a piece of blessed-bread (called "Antidoron" a Greek word meaning "Instead of the gifts") from one of the large gold-color-bowls the altar-boys are holding. Afterward, we invite you to join us for coffee hour at the Huffington Community Center. Meet a few folks, find out about our catechism classes and consider making us your new home and family.
