About Us

Adorned with Statuary and offering both traditional and contemporary Masses

St. Mary, Star of the Sea and Our Lady of Mercy Parishes in Duluth, MN are nourished and lead by one pastor, Fr. John C. Petrich. St. Mary is in the heart of Downtown Duluth and Our Lady is on Park Point.

St. Mary is adorned with magnificent statuary and stained glass windows and is of Polish descent. Many Polish families still find their way here and, being at the heart of Downtown, we are a melting pot of people of all walks of life.

Home to the only 24-hour Eucharistic Adoration Chapel in Duluth, St. Mary is unique in its calling to all Catholics of the area.

What to Expect

What are services like?
Our 4:30 pm, Saturday Mass is a traditional Mass with traditional hymns played on the organ. Our 9:30 am, Sunday Mass has music by a contemporary guitarist and is more upbeat. Our Noon, Sunday Mass is a mix of older and newer traditional hymns with the use of the organ.

What is the community like?
We are a multi-generational church. We are in the Downtown area and service many senior high rise complexes. Many college students live in Duluth and often find a home at St. Mary, Star of the Sea during the school season. We are a melting-pot of multi-cultural backgrounds. And, being the only church left in Duluth still adorned with its original statuary splendor, is a visiting place of many during the summer months. It is not unusual to host visitors with their cameras after Masses during the summer traveling season.

What if I'm not a Christian?
All people are welcome to come in, sit, listen, stay for Mass. We also offer a Bible study for Men on Wednesday mornings at 7:00 am in the office conference room. A Women's book study is held every-other Monday evening at 6:00 pm in the rectory dining room. Adult Religious Education (RCIA) is offered on Tuesday evenings in November through Easter. There are many opportunities to learn of the glory of Christ Jesus. Join us anytime!
