About Us

Communion, Open, Christian, Make Disciples, Spirit-led, Intelligent

We are a new church that was born from the merger of two respected churches in our community. As a new church, we are excited about our future and invite you to be a part of our creative process as we discover who God is calling us to be in this time and place.

Communion is a central part of our weekly worship service. We offer a variety of styles of small groups (Bible study, prayer, service & mission, youth), which we call Disciple Groups. We are a congregation that is open to questions and dialogue. We confess faith in Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord - but truly welcome anyone who is just exploring Christianity - a confession of faith is not required to be considered an active member of our community. We practice baptism by immersion by those able to confess faith for him/herself. We value discerning the movement of the Holy Spirit while valuing both an intelligent and practical faith.

We currently meet in a storefront near the west-side post office, but have purchased 10 acres of land between Menards and Highway 30.

Currently we are in relationship with several families who have come to Iowa as refugees from central Africa and we hope to partner with the African church.

What to Expect

What are services like?
Our services are difficult to describe because they change to match the message. Overall though we start with a welcome and a few songs, then we pray and listen to someone share his/her/their musical gifts. We then have a 10 - 15 minute sermon, which is followed by a time of prayer sharing as a congregation - as we share thanksgivings, prayer requests, and pray for each other. Following prayer we have offering. We conclude by sharing the Lord's Supper/Communion. But don't be surprised if you come one Sunday and we are all sitting in the round, or sitting at tables eating breakfast as we worship together. One of the special things about our church is that you have a choice to sit in chairs near the front that are lined up in rows like pews or to sit around tables in the back. In regards to dress - anything goes! We have members who are constrained economically and others who are blessed economically. Members who are retired, college students, nurses, service providers, and the like. People dress in what is most comfortable to them. So on one Sunday you may see one member in worn jeans and another in a suit - and we accept each other as we come.

What is the community like?
Very friendly and kind. One of our distinctive features is that we have several people in their 90s (even one member who is over 100 yrs old). We are an open-minded congregation with members coming from a variety of backgrounds. We really like questions. We are unpretentious and full of love.

What if I'm not a Christian?
You will feel very welcomed. We won't push Christianity at you, as we will be honest about our own faith journeys, the ups and downs, the moments of faith and the moments of doubt. Yet, we do believe in Jesus Christ and our faith runs deep, even if we don't use "Christian language." And if you are interested in exploring Christianity and what it means to become a follower of Jesus Christ, our pastor or one of our members would be happy to meet with you to answer your questions. We also periodically offer a Pastor's Class, which is an introduction to the Christian faith.

New Disciples is my old-new church home. Two separate local congregations faced declining attendance, a flood, a changing attitude and they have come together with a renewed spirit and sense of purpose. We are deliberately looking at what we do and why we do it, drawing from scripture and prayer. We have a welcoming heart. We have a strong tradition of music. Newcomers can expect to be greeted but not smothered. We will listen to your questions and your concerns about living in Cedar Rapids in the 21st century and how God is playing a role in your life.
