About Us

Putting God First! Praise, Prayer and Partnership.

Mt Carmel is affiliated with the African Methodist Episcopal Church, which is a connectional intercontinental Church. Although we are predominantly African American, our membership includes many ethnicities and is receptive of all people.

Our name speaks of our history, beliefs, and structure –

African: The founders of our Church were called Africans because they originated from the Mother Continent of Africa. Though we are a predominantly Black Church, staying true to our Motto (Humankind our Family) we love all people and welcome them to become part of our Zion.

Methodist: Richard Allen, our Founder and First Consecrated Bishop believed that Africans of that era could be more acquainted with the Gospel of our Lord Jesus, through the Biblical teachings of John Wesley, the founder of Methodism. Wesley believed that our Salvation is received by the Grace of God – We are saved by Grace through Faith by Jesus Christ alone. We, as Methodists believe that God’s Loving Grace comes through the witness of the Holy Spirit Who is active in our lives daily transforming (sanctifying) us.

Episcopal: Our form of government is Episcopally operated. Spiritual leaders called Bishops lead our Church. The AME Church currently has 20 Episcopal Districts throughout the United States, Canada, the Caribbean, South America, Europe, Asia, and Africa.

This Episcopal Structure is designed to enhance the mission of the church and to ensure that we operate as smoothly as possible with God in Christ as our eternal Founder. Mt Carmel is part of the Brooklyn – Westchester District of the New York Conference of the First Episcopal District of the AME Church.

What to Expect

What is the community like?
Mount Carmel is comprised of such a diverse community and it is something that we love about our congregation because it shows that Jesus' love has no bounds. We have families that have been attending the church for generations as well as members who have are new to the area or new to the church! If you have never stepped foot in a church or trying to find your new church family this is the place to come. The people are friendly, always involved in community out reach, and ready to share the good news with those who are ready to listen!

What if I'm not a Christian?
You are welcomed! You do not have to be a Christian to attend services at Mount Carmel. Our doors are open to everyone who has a desire to know Jesus Christ. The first step is coming to a service, 11:00 am. We offer many opportunities to deepen your understanding of Jesus Christ through bible studies, missions, Vacation Bible School, and various other ways to serve the community.

I love That my Great Grand Mother Dinah English-Smith is the Original Founder of this Church. They took her name out of the stained glass in 1990's some time after my Grand mother Maryann Boyd passed in 1997. I know it's my Great Grand Mother's Church and it still lives on. For as the Church is Blessed so are we. We are are Great grandma we know who Founded this Church and what year.
