What to Expect

What are services like?
Our 9 a.m. service is family-oriented. Young children are invited downstairs during the sermon, for story time, singing or hands-on activity. We gather around the altar for communion. Children are welcome to stand right in front of the altar, so that they can see what's happening. We know that young children do not have a long attention span, so we try to keep the service to 50 mn-1hour. It sometimes feels like organized chaos, but we like the joy and energy that they young kids bring us. During coffee hour, children are invited to join our Godly Play classes or youth groups, while their parents can relax and share a moment with other adults! The 11 a.m. is more traditional and more contemplative. We have a small but wonderful choir. Every last Sunday of the month and during the Summer (between Memorial Day and Labor Day) we have a single service at 9:30 a.m. , so that the congregation can worship together (and catch up with each others!) We have a potluck every Wednesday at 6 p.m., followed by adult Christian education.

What is the community like?
Recently, the congregation was asked to come up with 10 adjectives to describe ourselves. Here's the list: innovative, prophetic, family-centered, loving, pastoral, safe, grounded in tradition, inclusive, compassionate, generous... We also stressed that we are a place of healing.

What if I'm not a Christian?
All are welcome! Wherever you are on your journey of faith, we will take you in and nurture you for as long as you need. Our altar is God's table. If you are so moved, you can partake in Holy Communion. Just place your hand on top of each other. If you would prefer to receive a blessing, cross your arms across your chest. We would love it if you come downstairs for coffee and conversation, but we understand if you prefer to duck out after the last hymn.

I've been attending Holy Innocents since 2004 and through changes, one constant remains - we welcome others. The 9:00 service description is pretty accurate - sometimes chaotic but always loving. Kids are kids. The 11:00 is more traditional. Come join us!
