What to Expect

What are services like?
A Worshipful Church Singing at Friendly is participatory in that we invite everyone to sing songs to one another and to the Lord. To en- courage this, we do not use a choir or band when we get together on Sunday mornings; rather, we leave room for the voice of the believer to express what the heart feels & the mind thinks. A Communing Church Communion is shared each week and offered to those who belong to Christ. If you belong to Christ we belong to you and you belong to us. A Caring Church Responses: After the sermon the elders will be available in the prayer room for anyone seeking prayer and the spir- itual support of the church. The prayer room is located at the back of the auditorium behind the class windows. This is a safe, confidential place to pray with others. If you would like to be baptized into Christ, or formally associate with Friendly, you can do so by indicating your desire to one of our elders during the response time.

What is the community like?
An Understanding Church Many people searching for a church want to know what to expect when they arrive. Friendly Avenue understands visiting a new church can be challenging, unnerving, or even frustrating and scary. We want you to know what to expect when you arrive, so you can feel more at ease, and to be able to enjoy your time with our family of believers. A Welcoming Church We are glad you are considering visiting with us! After the service we invite those who are new guests to stop by the Guest Services booth in the lobby. We’d like to meet you and give you a small gift to say thank you for worshiping with us. If you would like to let us know you were with us, you can fill out the communication card attached to the program and drop it in the offering plate. An Independent Church Friendly is an independent, nondenominational church led by locally appointed elders. All our activities, practices and common beliefs are governed by the authority of the Bible, God’s word. We hope you will join us as we pray to be a people living in the will of God. A Diverse Church We are a diverse community of believers continually being changed by the Spirit of God into the image of Christ as we WORSHIP God, STUDY His word, and SERVE others. A Family-Friendly Church A nursery is available during our service for children, birth to 18 months. All of the teachers in our children's classes go through national background checks.

What if I'm not a Christian?
If you can sing like Pavarotti or Chris Tomlin, we’re glad you are here (especially because we sing a lot of a cappella). We’ll even accept you if you sing like Kermit the Frog (I won’t point fingers if you won’t). You are welcome here if you are “browsing,” just woke up, or just got out of prison. You are welcome if you are a lifelong North Carolinian, a Yankee transplant, or from a foreign country. If you are more Methodist than Wesley, more Catholic than the Pope, or haven’t been to church since . . . well, let’s be honest, you can’t remember the last time you went to church (and liked it). If you are lonely or have 5,000 Facebook friends, you are welcome! Private school, public school, home-school and no school are welcome. Harvard or Harding, Duke or UNC, or no college background, you are welcome here. We extend a special welcome to you soccer moms, NASCAR enthusiasts, starving musicians, tree-huggers, latte-sippers, NRA members, NPR subscribers, Prius drivers, Apple-sticker-on-my-car-snobs, vegetarians, or steak connoisseurs. We welcome those in recovery, those in addiction, and those in denial. We welcome those who have the gift of faith and those who are very suspicious of spiritual welcome notes on church websites from ministers. You are welcome if you have no money to put in the collection plate, or don’t know what a collection plate is. We welcome those who believe the world is flat; don’t work hard, work too hard. We welcome those who are here because your parents are in town and felt obligated to go to church. If you love Jesus, like Jesus, don’t know much about Jesus, you are welcome here. We welcome those who are inked, pierced or both. We offer a special welcome to those who could use a prayer right now, had religion shoved down your throat as a kid, or got lost in traffic and wound up here by mistake. We welcome tourists, seekers and doubters, bleeding hearts … and you! The point is this. We’re enthralled with the life and teachings of Jesus. We take his life and purpose seriously, but we don’t take ourselves too seriously. We believe that everyone is welcome to explore what God is doing in the world and how God might be using you and us for God’s purposes. Grace and Peace from all of us at Friendly Avenue Church of Christ.
