Who We Are

Cottonwood is a diverse community of Jesus followers in Rio Rancho. We promise to be…

Relevant. We're seeking God. We want that mysterious, profound relationship with him--the kind we read about.

Real. We believe God is true – and real. He put on skin and came to us in the person of Jesus. He hears us, sees us, and touches our lives. He promises abundant life, and He's the One who keeps his promises.

Relaxed. Jesus ate with sinners, wore sandals like everyone else, and made wine for a wedding. Sounds relaxed to me. Rio Rancho is, too. We think that's a good thing.

Our Services

What to Expect

What are services like?
Our services are informal, often with some Q/A time and/or personal stories. Our vision is to be a Biblical, healthy, effective disciple-making community. 1. Biblical - it is our desire to follow the Bible, believing it is true in all that it teaches 2. Healthy - we desire to follow the Heart Attitudes (see on our website, cottonwoodchurch.com) 3. Disciple-making - we desire to become self-feeding followers of Christ growing in our love for God and others

What is the community like?
Our Mission: Who we are Cottonwood is a fun community for the church-challenged to experience the love of Jesus. We believe church should be a fun place of safety, truth, and radical change. We go rappelling, take missions trips, have Bible studies and even go 4-wheeling together. We’re all a bit church-challenged, but we’ve experienced the love of Jesus here.

What if I'm not a Christian?
Then you can join the club! OK, it's not a club, but we have many non-Christians who come on Sundays. Some are curious, some are being kind to their husbands or wives, and others just believe in what we are doing in the community and Haiti, so they come to support us even though they aren't Christians.

Picture: It's of me and my crazy family on The Color Run in 2012. Family: I met my wife JoLynn in college and she has given me four wonderful children: Megan and Amanda (both now married), Micah, and Caleb. Education: I went to a bunch of schools (fun, but not too productive…) finally getting my life together and graduating from Criswell in Dallas and Moody Grad School in Chicago. Personal Stuff: As a missionary kid, I’ve always known who Jesus was, but it wasn’t until college that I really began to look at how He fit into my life. Discovering the answer has been a mysterious, exhilarating, long (and sometimes difficult) journey, but I could not imagine a life without Christ. Outside of Church: I love eating, archery, rappelling, fixing cars (too often), spending time with friends (never enough) and raising my children. Some of my favorite books include Mere Christianity and all things CS Lewis, Blue Like Jazz, and Crazy Love by Francis Chan. A few of my favorite movies are Napoleon Dynamite (ughhhhhhhhh), Princess Bride (Inconceivable!), Shadowlands, and Blues Brothers (We’re on a mission from God!) My book BIZARRE Bible Stories was just reprinted in paperback, and BIZARRE Bible Stories 2 is at the printers, due out in bookstores in Spring 2013.
