About Us

America's First Parish -- Founded September 8,1565

The Cathedral Basilica of St. Augustine is home to the first Catholic parish in what is now the United States of America. Founded on September 8, 1565, our present church building dates from its construction in the 1790's. The church became a cathedral when the Diocese of St. Augustine was established in 1870. Pope Paul VI designated the church as a minor basilica in December 1976 because of its historical and spiritual significance.

What to Expect

What are services like?
The Cathedral Basilica of St. Augustine celebrates the liturgies and rituals of the Roman Catholic Church. We pride ourselves on "cathedral-quality" liturgies as we celebrate Mass, the Liturgy of the Hours, Exposition and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament, the other sacraments, devotions and Rite of Christian Funerals.

What is the community like?
The Cathedral Parish has an active group of parishioners who give of their time, talent and treasure to assist in the building of the Kingdom of God. We are proud of our historical heritage and share the story of our history with our visitors.

What if I'm not a Christian?
Roman Catholics are Christians. While we are unable to invite those who are not Catholic to receive Holy Communion or the Church's Sacraments, we do invite people of other faiths to join us for worship.
