American football is a constant reminder that everybody worships.
“The only choice we get,” said David Foster Wallace, “is what to worship.” In America, it’s pretty clear that many of us choose football. Every Sunday from September to the Super Bowl, we find fellowship with other “believers” in the Touchdown Temple–whether we profess religion formally or not.
Growing up, I had no interest in football, but something shifted in my adult years as I began to enjoy the multi-faceted game and its culture of camaraderie. I’m a new fan now, and what has captivated me the most is how people seem to worship the game, its teams and players like textbook deities.
I’m no seasoned expert in football, but I can smell worship a mile away.
I can also see it on YouTube.
Here is a list of my favorite videos of people overwhelmed by the power of football fandom, plus a video I put together that captures the Touchdown Temple in all its mystery and magic.
