“When we talk about war, that I think part of Republicans problems and frankly to tell you the truth some in the evangelical Christian movement I think have appeared too eager for war.
“. . .When I read the New Testament, when I read about Jesus, he wasn’t really involved with a war of his days. In fact people rebuked him for not being the king they wanted.
“. . . .We’re talking about ‘blessed are the peacemakers’ not ‘blessed are the warmakers.’ That doesn’t mean that we don’t have a strong national defense but we should be, at least I think the Republican Party needs to be the party that is a reluctant party to go to war who believes in a strong national defense because it’s a prevention of war not because it allows us to go and be involved in war everywhere and we’ve got to have boots on the ground.”
