Bishop Eddie Long denied allegations that he coerced three of his male congregants into sexual relationships after lawsuits were filed against him claiming “sexual impropriety.”

The AP reported that the Georgia megachurch pastor “abused his spiritual authority to seduce [young men] with cars, money, clothes, jewelry, international trips and access to celebrities,” a claim, if true, that would make Long not only an abuser, but a hypocrite. From the report:

Long has called for a national ban on same-sex marriage and his church counsels gay members to become straight. In 2004, he led a march with Bernice King to her father’s Atlanta grave to support a national constitutional amendment to protect marriage “between one man and one woman.”

Long is far from the first religious leader to face allegations of sexual impropriety in recent years.

Ted Haggard was a Colorado megachurch leader and president of the National Evangelical Association when it was revealed that he was involved in a gay affair. In fact, the now ‘completely heterosexual‘ Haggard weighed in on the allegations against Long, saying, “Nobody’s guilty until the court says he’s guilty.”

The Catholic church has been plagued by an international sex abuse scandal for nearly a decade.

Several ultra-Orthodox rabbis in Brooklyn have been arrested or sued for abusing boys in the past few years.

Is there a relationship between piety and impropriety? Or do we simply pay more attention to the hypocrisy of religious leaders when they fall?

I know these are just allegations at this point, but let’s not use phrases like “when ministers fall. . .” That severely diminishes and demeans the suffering of kids and adults who were sexually violated, especially those hurt by powerful, prominent clerics.David Clohessy, Director, SNAP, Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, (7234 Arsenal Street, St. Louis MO 63143), 314 566 9790 cell ([email protected]

You don’t make up allegations like this. The shame and guilt that permeates every fiber of a survivor makes it next to impossible to talk about it. When those of us brave enough to do so do it, you have to realize that we are victims. The minister may have “fallen”, but he sent a child to hell in this life.I would bet my life the allegations are true. If they weren’t, you would not risk prison for false police reporting and the ridicule and contempt you would face when found out.As a survivor, I can tell you these men who do this are NOT “falling”. They are evil monsters who shame the name of religion. And condemn their victims to a living hell. No punishment can give a victim their innocence back. REMEMBER THAT!

Thoughts to Ponder: There are additional victims or additional conspirators!! MAY GOD HELP US!!

It’s funny how many people do not understand the leasons learned from the greatest story ever told in the Bible. Real Christians will tell this story over and over and spread the good news about how Christ died for our sins, and the price he had to pay. All of us fall short. We all take a “licking” going through life’s ups and downs. The real challenge is how are going to respond to take a “licking”. Just like Christ I hope we all “GET UP” and keep on ticking. Pastor Eddie Long’s Church has “served” their community well and has accomplished great things (Elderly, Youth, etc.). Pastor Ediie Long, is a “Child of God” and he will GET UP and continue the work GOD has trusted him to do. It is not my place to judge Pastor Eddie Long. GOD will take care of that just like he will do for you and me.

RKORNEGAY1, sounds like you like “licking” God’s children.Sounds sounds very kinky and perhaps illegal.

Eddie Long is a predator, pure and simple. A sheep in wolves’ clothing whose cultlike followers will never believe anything bad about their self-proclaimed “bishop.” Of course he’s denying it. What else can he do? And he may be telling the truth when he says he didn’t coerce three young men because he probably coerced dozens over the years. Let us pray for his victims and hope they have the courage to come forward.

I sense very strongly that Bishop Eddie is being attacked by those who desire to besmirch his image as a man dedicated to promoting the precepts and virtues of Jesus Christ. All who truly stand for Christ become targets of those the Bible calls unrighteous, fornicators, adulterers, sodomites, etc. We live in a society where the righteous must stand up because righteousness is a cause worth standing for.

19Chevy57 mimics my thoughts in why it’s improbable these kids made this up. These are not 3-year olds who don’t know how to articulate what happened to them. And if they were received special treatment, there are plenty of people around who saw them receiving special treatment. So why would they give up all of this special treatment and imprison the person who was giving them all of these favors? Makes no sense unless you believe these kids are all extortionists.

RKORNEGAY1- While I can understand your loyalty and support for the Bishop, I cannot understand you being so naive and blinded that you are unwilling to even visit the idea that this Pastor could have acted in an inappropriate manner. It seems that you and others like you have placed Bishop Long and those like him, on a pedestal, idolizing and worshiping the ground they walk on. helping them to perpetrate this false image of flawlessness. Because of this, you are too eager to turn a blind eye to any shortcomings and wrongdoings. Many of you only seem interested in his well being only, and are not showing any “Christian-like” empathy, or compassion for the accusers. Because of people like you, many victims of abuse are afraid to confront or report their abusers and go many years suffering because they feel they will not be believed and it is likely they wont when it comes to people that we hold in such high regard. Also, those who are held in such high esteem are very aware of their status and often use it to manipulate and intimidate their victims knowing their word will be believed over the victims.

It should come as no shock that a “Christian” leader who allows himself to become rich in this world and have his flock fawning over him would fall into corruption. The Bible says this is what will happen. “For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; and they will turn their ears away from the truth…” 2 Timothy 4:3-4

How to Take a Licking and Keep on Ticking -Once upon a time there was another Black Man who took a licking. He took a licking for you and me. He was lied on, spat upon and beat on. The crowd/mob shouted kill him… and the Roman King crucified him on that old rugged cross. They put his body in an old borrowed tomb and three days later he “GOT UP” and is still ticking. Pastor Eddie Long is a child of God.

Rkornegay1, please tell me you were being sarcastic.

The attorney for Bishop Long has suggested that we consider the character of the plantiff that recently committed the burglary offese at the church. My assumption is that he is alluding to the fact that this person may have a personal vendetta against the Bishop, or that his previous offense speaks volumes of this plantiff. I can see where he is going with that, but what can you say about the character or motive for the other two plantiffs? Interesting!

Why are so many anti-gay people disgusting sexual predators? It really makes me curious. Is it some sort of projection thing? Or are they just assuming that we must, somehow, be as disgusting as they are themselves? IDGI.

I am a lesbian pastor, and am deeply troubled by the claims of sexual misconduct by Eddie Long. I do not see a causal link between piety and impropriety, as the article asks. I do however see that Bishop Long became seduced by his own power, and in doing so made himself his own god. Instead of following the God he proclaimed to worship, Long made his own commandments, made others serve him instead of being a servant himself, and surrounded himself and his victims with the false idols money buys: a private jet, a Bentley, a mansion.

In regard to the Bishop Long Case. I would like to add that I am a survivor of molestation and I did not have the courage to tell. I believe that the young men coming forth speaks volumes for thier courage. Why are people so quick to believe the Bishop over the young men? Is it because of his power, his money or what? I take the stand that if the Bishop E. Long would stand and confess his fault, I would be the first to forgive him. However, if he lies about this situation and get caught (as it seems he has), shame on all of those who continue to follow in and under his leadership. I know for a fact that because of what happen to me from the time I was 5yrs old until I was 13 at the hand of a trusted man left me in a total mess. God and only God was able to prevent me from ending my life after the struggles I had with attempting to function after surviving such pain. Now you want to talk about the scripture, what about those things done in the dark will soon come to light! I pray for all involved, but as for the adult in the situation SHAME ON YOU IF YOU CONTINUE TO LIE! To all the victims that have taken a stand, THANK GOD FOR YOU, and as for the others who remain quiet, take a stand and be made free.

The “victims” wallow in self pity and go for the big cash payout. Seventeen and eighteen year olds know better. The press will use this to fill hundreds of hours of air time and rake in advertizing dollars in the process.Bishop Eddie Long will vehemently deny anything happened, claim he’s a victim and desperately try to hold together his cash cow congregation. Nice gold chain he has there. Bet it’s real. Why doesn’t he go ahead and take a lie detector test and get it over with. Frankly, the story is not worth our time.

  • NotaFan1

His lawyers denied the allegations. Eddie Long has not denied the allegations, or said anything about the allegations were untrue, he only said he would fight them. He never told his congregation that he was innocent of the allegations. He only said that he was not a perfect man. Religious leaders should be held to a higher standard because scripture commands it.

  • 424me

I just watched Bishop Long’s “sermon” to his congregation and his “press conference.” He is one arrogant sob. People always speak louder by what they do not say. HE NEVER SAID, “THOSE YOUNG MEN ARE LYING . . . I NEVER TOUCHED THEM INAPPROPRIATELY . . . THEY MISUNDERSTOOD MY BROTHERLY/FATHERLY AFFECTIONATE GESTURES . . . I NEVER GAVE ONE OF THEM A SLEEPING PILL . . . I NEVER SLEPT IN THE SAME BED WITH ANY OF THEM . . .” etc. His “I’m David against Goliath, I got five rocks and I haven’t thrown one yet” comment was very telling; was that a threat to the young men and others that have not yet come forward? Does he know the record of the young men’s lawyer? What happens when she subpoenas the hard drives and computer networks of all his computers, laptops, Blackberries, cell phones, iPads, etc. and all those of the Longfellows Academy? Why did he twice say, “I’m not perfect?” Was there ever a question of his perfection? If he’s not guilty, his behavior up to this point is classic predator behavior. These are not young children under the age of 10 who can easily be manipulated, these are teen boys who rationally explained what happened to them. As a matter of fact, the age and gender of the accusers make the charges all the more believeable; they are right at the age of “consent” in that state, old enough to explain what happened and they are YOUNG BOYS. If the accusers had been young girls or young women, they would have automatically been dismissed, not believed and their character attacked because as we all know, Black girls and women are NEVER believed when we say we have been abused, not even by our own people, much less wider society. All of what Bishop Long said today was a set up to aid in his defense. I can’t wait to hear from the other accusers and all the evidence against him. Finally, why was Rev. Homophobic Berniece King up there asking for money, first thing? :( :(

“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” (NIV, Matthew 6:19-21)

I just think it is so sad when Christians, begun to serve men above God. The bible speaks of wolves in sheep clothes. The bible speaks of hirelings vs. shepherds. We are to love our leaders and support them which is true, but what happens when these allegations are prove to be true. Sure we are to forgive, because it should not be an option. Yet, do we continue to go on with life like nothing happen. If Bishop long is innocent, I pray that God avenge him. However, if he is guilty, there has to be some harsh repercussions. How can a Christian sit and listen to a man, that has been found guilty of having oral sodomy with another man. It is disgusting. Yet the church still going to have his back and that’s the saddest part of it all. I believe if satan himself was to come and ran a church, the Christians will still praise him and defend him. I don’t know what this world is coming to.

  • drhemaword

Lesbian pastor. Please! God will never bless no mess. We can twist scriptures anyway we choose, However, there will be a day of reckoning. What have you done with all the scriptures that preaching against your lifestyle? And I guess the saddest part of it all is you feel as though I am the one insane. May God open your eyes of your heart before it’s too late. Not only will you be held accountable for yourself, but, also for all those that you have cause to stray away from the truth.

Most young men will not dare go on television and say someone molested on sexually abused them. I believe the young me are telling the truth. But the problem is that everyone wants to use God’s grace on Eddie Long instead of realizing if he did do this that he broke the laws of the land.
