Is Glenn Beck a gay marriage advocate?

Beck, a convert to Mormonism, weighed in on the Proposition 8 ruling on the O’Reilly Factor Wednesday night, saying that he does not think the government “has anything to do with marriage. That is a religious rite.”

From the segment:

O’Reilly: Do you believe that gay marriage is a threat to country in any way?

Beck: A threat to the country?

O’Reilly: Yeah, is it going to harm it in anyway?

Beck: No I don’t. Will the gays come and get us?

O’Reilly: No, okay. Is it going to harm the country?

Beck: I believe that Thomas Jefferson said: “If it neither breaks my leg nor picks my pocket what difference is it to me?

Beck: A threat to the country?

O’Reilly: Yeah, is it going to harm it in anyway?

Beck: No I don’t. Will the gays come and get us?

O’Reilly: No, okay. Is it going to harm the country?

Beck: I believe that Thomas Jefferson said: “If it neither breaks my leg nor picks my pocket what difference is it to me?

Unlike many religious conservatives, Beck takes a libertarian approach to the gay marriage issue, even breaking with the teaching of his own church: The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints lead the grassroots opposition to gay marriage in California despite the LDS history of polygamous marriage, or as Mitt Romney called it, marriage between “a man and a woman and a woman and a woman.”

An essential question for religious people grappling with issues like gay marriage is, ‘Should the government legislate morality?‘ Abortion-rights supporters have long used the mantra “Don’t like abortion? Don’t have one!” to argue that individual moral judgments should not be imposed by the state.

Still, morality is frequently legislated.

In May, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, a Catholic, told a religious gathering that she supports legislation “in keeping with the values” of Jesus. “We have to give voice to what that means in terms of public policy that would be in keeping with the values of the Word,” the speaker said.

From the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan to immigration reform, there is hardly a policy priority that is not framed by it supporters in terms of its moral importance.

How do religious organizations -and religious people -determine when to legislate what they believe to be moral? Why do you think Beck rejects government-imposed morality when it comes to gay marriage? Where do you draw the line?

“How do religious organizations -and religious people -determine when to legislate what they believe to be moral?”You’ll have to ask them – I don’t know.”Why do you think Beck rejects government-imposed morality when it comes to gay marriage?”I have no idea.”Where do you draw the line?”I have no morals; therefore, I don’t have to draw a line.

It is actually hard to debate the questions because they are so big.I want what we do in the law to be based on reason, logic, and facts supported by research, and to be based on the ideals of freedom and equality.I want religious doctrine submitted to reason, logic, and facts supported by research before it is allowed to influence law. I want church’s taxed if they insist on becoming embroiled in formation of state law or federal law. I want a church that endorses any candidate for any public office to automatically lose tax exempt status for five years for each occurrence.Christians as a source of information about morality continue to lose ground when they lie and distort the truth in order to manipulate people to vote the way they want. They lose ground when they insist on teaching creationism in schools and putting false requirements on the teaching of real science. Based on the behavior of major Christian leaders and what they endorsed as tactics during the Prop 8 campaign makes it look like the Jesus they profess doesn’t care about the truth or distortion. Stupid me. I thought He is the Truth and the Light. I am absolutely amazed that Glenn Beck has taken the position he has taken – that is live-and-let-live. Amazed.

How do religious organizations -and religious people -determine when to legislate what they believe to be moral? It did not even occur to the “bishops” that this sort of public declaration might outrage not only nonCatholics but secular, religious Catholics as well. And, yunno, they probably would not have cared an iota is it did occur to them. And then there is same-sex marriage. We have Senators who loudly proclaim that they will do nothing of which the “bishops” do not approve, eg., Ben Nelson, who God willing, will not be re-elected.These clerical legislators, whom we did not elect, use their nonprofit status to accumulate enormous wealth–Evangelicals, Presbyterians, the Holy Roman Empire–to lobby congress, etc. The most recent expenditure of the RCC to deprive gays of their civil rights was 250,000 USD, merely a drop in the bucket of what they have spent thus far.Maybe, it’s me, but try as I might I do not understand the Consitutionality of theocracy.

“Any action that does not harm another should be legal. Robbing someone harms him – illegal. Gay people getting married harms no one – legal.” How that a plague overcame them while they were gathered together at Mount Sinai. And those that murmured against the Lord, who were consumed by fire at the place called Taberaah, and again when a multitude of the people who lusted was slain by God and were all buried at Kibroth-hattaavah!Is it not written that God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrha, Adamah, and Zeboim in His anger, and in His wrath, because the people had wholely perverted themselves; men lying with men and women lying with women, having altered the natural use of the body, for God had given them over to a reprobate mind. Why thinkest thou that you are good? Do you eschew evil? or do you approve of evil among you? Why do you think that you will escape the wrath of God O’ foolish man who not only approves of this vile perversion, but bless those who engage in it?O’ generation of vipers, thinkest thou that Gods’ wrath will slumber forever? You shall receive your reward; for you cause the innocent ones to sin by teaching your doctrine of devils among the people! For it is written that in the last days men would call evil good and good evil. Verily, Verily, I say unto you, that broad is the way, and wide is the gate that leadeth to everlasting destruction; but strait is the way and narrow is the gate that leadeth unto everlasting life, and few there are that shall enter therein.

“Any action that does not harm another should be legal. Robbing someone harms him – illegal. Gay people getting married harms no one – legal.” O’ foolish and adulterous generation, why do you tempt the Lord thy God to wrath? Have you not read that those who worshiped the golden calf all perished, above 3,000 souls? How that a plague overcame them while they were gathered together at Mount Sinai, and those that murmured against the Lord, who were consumed by fire at the place called Taberaah, and again when a multitude of the people who lusted was slain by God and were all buried at Kibroth-hattaavah!Is it not written that God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrha, Adamah, and Zeboim in His anger, and in His wrath, because the people had wholely perverted themselves; men lying with men and women lying with women, having altered the natural use of the body, for God had given them over to a reprobate mind. You shall receive your reward; for you cause the innocent ones to sin by teaching your doctrine of devils among the people! For it is written that in the last days men would call evil good and good evil. They will worship the creature more than the Creator!

“Any action that does not harm another should be legal. Robbing someone harms him – illegal. Gay people getting married harms no one – legal.” BUT..if there is a God of Creation (which I already know exists) Then the harm that homosexual marriage brings is: (1). It influences our little ones and declares to them that such deviant and perverse lifestyles are approved of and acceptable in our society, perhaps even encouraged by some blind teachers among us!(2). The Word of God declares that homosexuality is an abomination (a sin) in the sight of God. That being said, it is certainly the choice of two consenting adults to enter into that sort of deviant life style, for they have “free will”, even though, less than 50 years ago, such deviant and perverted sexual practices were classified as felony criminal offenses under our criminal codes throughout most of the States until the perveyors of filth and perversion poored hundreds of million of dollars into their fight for legitimacy within this society.Using our own U S Constitution and the Bill of Rights to destroy this nations moral laws from within. But these things were foretold, long ago by the Prophets of God. Surely it is come to pass that men call evil good and good evil, and they rejoice in those who practice such things among us. But God is not blind and His wrath will be revealed against all that do such things. While it si the right of homosexuals to walk in the darkness, it is also Gods declared right to destroy all who reject His laws! If you do not like that argument, take it up with HIM! For surely all will have an opportunity to defend themselves before the God of Creation at the Great White Throne Judgment where the wicked will be judged! If you support homosexual marriages, you are not a true Christian and you will be judged for that! For by the Word of God, who declares that those who do such things, in not eschewing evil, even approving of it, is not of Him. For if the Spirit of Christ abides in you, then you would have ears that hear, and eyes that see. All who approve of this vile and wicked practice has never known God, nor do they discern that which is of Him. The living Word of God condemns all who practice such things. If you were of Christ, you would know this already. But sadly, they who profess Christ with their lips alone are not of Him, but they who do the will of my Father who is in Heaven. Is it not written: They worship me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. Some will, because of the hardness of their own hearts, proclaim that I hate and condemn, but I neither hate nor do I condemn, but HE who has sent me bears witness to that which I declare among you all, for He established these truths in His Word.

“Why do we allow tax exemptions for Mormons and Catholics who dishonestly, immorally and fraudulently violate them by giving money or forming huge, multi-state PACs to bash gays? If anything, we should refund taxes paid by gays to a theocratic US Government that looks the other way at these white-collar crimes.”"Homophobia a disease like religious bigotry. These shouldn’t be embraced by the state either but they are.”I am neither a Mormon or Catholic, nor have I been called to the gospel of Christ by the approval or by the traditions of men, but by the grace and immeasureable mercies of the Living God, through revelation by faith in Christ Jesus! Why do you condemn those who decry immorality, when you approve of those who are immoral? Why do you call that which is evil, good? Why do you proclaim that this government is a thoracy? It is not a theocracy, for our leaders by concensus, have foresaken and cast off all references to God within our society. Have they not, by their errant political and personal philosophies, cast God out of the affairs of men, from their courts, their schools, their public places and institutions, whereby they have effectively removed the protective arm of God from those who will not honor Him?By rejecting God from the affairs of men, have they not opened the gates to all manner of ungodliness, wickedness, and doctrines of demons? Why do you not see the growing conflict and confusion, the wickedness in high places, and the manifestation of the works of the principalities and powers of darkness that hold sway over this nation and its’ people? You are full of knowledge and think yourselves wise, but you have become like fools, by rejecting the grace and mercies of Almighty God. You have exchanged peace, prosperity, and safety for this nation and its’ people for the prince of darkness of this world who desires your destruction! Those who reject legitimizing the homosexual lifestyle, in your words, are “homophobic” and “religious bigots”! O’ foolish man, do you not know that He who knew you before He formed in your mothers womb has long ago condemned those who engage in such wickedness? If God did not spare Sodom and Gomorrha, Adamah, and Zeboim in His anger, how do you reason that all that who engage in such things will escape the wrath of a just and righteous God?

I want to know what Glen and Thomas Jefferson would have to say about pedophilia. Pedophiles don’t pick your pocket and break your leg.Homosexuality is a disease like pedophilia and shouldn’t be embraced by the state. I think in the long run that if you don’t give such people medical care-or at least not support their sickness by saying they can get married-they are going to break your leg or pick your pocket. Prison is not the answer to ANY crime in the end game-just like torture. Now of course bad and evil isn’t real, so you go figure.

I continue to be fascinated by this preoccupation of heteros with bestiality. I’m afraid that you will never wed your favorite pooch this side of the Atlantic, but look at it this way: as long as you keep it relatively quiet, what you do inside your own home with a consenting adult canine is your own affair.

Wonder why Glenn didn’t give that Jefferson quote the context it deserves! here’s the entire thing.”But it does me no injury for my neighbor to say there are twenty gods or no God. It neither picks my pocket nor breaks my leg.”

  • English_D

Homosexuality with man or beast or children does not need to be a religious issue at all. Every nation which condoned these acts fell from power through rapid decline. It’s history. Those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it.
