Dear Pamela,Great Work, great Background. Your ideals are: “strong supporter of gender equality in the Muslim world, and as a proponent of the woman-led prayer movement has served as imam on various occasions.” Then how come you are wearing the veil like any ordinary muslim women??? Weil is the islamic way of downgrading women. Hiding women behind weil means preventing them from going ahead in life like their regular male compatriots.Hiding them from the real world. Preventing them from interacting with men outside their home/faith/whatever. I see innumerable cases of Muslim men marrying outside their religion, without any problem. This is prevented for women. They cannot do it. Period. You have honour killings etc to correct any descripencies of this type. Pamela, can you explain me how by wearing a weil you can even think of achieving anything close to gender equality in Islam? People like you (who seems to have converted from Christian background) give encouragement to radical islamic kooks the gall to behave the way they do- you make them feel that they are right. They will start beleiving that white women convert to Islam and wear a weil- inspite of their bad behaviour. Forget the dream that you are going to improve their cause (islamic women’s cause ie). You are going to add to their misery. I am from Hindu faith- we do not subjugate our women this way. They can have their own free life- they can go wherever they like- do whatever they do. Religion does not bind us to do anything. Only people do.regards
